Sighing loudly, she pressed her face against the window pane. The rain had been coming down most of the day. Bored, she needed a change of scenery. Shawn put on her tennis shoes and rain coat, then walked out of the apartment.
Outside, she breathed in the scent of the rain. It was calming and fresh. She walked along the boulevard and noticed how the rain puddles were reflecting the cloudy sky, the street lights, and a set of headlights from a passing car.
Oh, it felt to great to be out! She enjoyed walking in the rain. She turned onto Chestnut Street, still breathing in the sights, and thoroughly enjoying herself.
At the corner of Chestnut and Main, Shawn stopped and eyed a puddle of mud. She grinned and recalled how she loved to play when she was young. There was nobody around. Shawn took off her left shoe, and stuck her pink painted big toe into it. Ohhhhhh it felt cold and squishy. Giggling, she stuck the rest of her left foot in, watching the mud squeeze out from between the tops of her toes. Again she laughed out loud.
Across the street Sam was walking Trixie. Rain or shine, the dog still insisted on her daily walk. When he got to the area where Shawn had by now lost track of her surroundings, he stopped to watch as Trixie busied herself sniffing the telephone pole.
Shawn had taken off her other shoe and now both her feet were in the mud puddle. She squished her feet together, watching the mud erupting from in between them like a volcano exploding. She rolled up her pants legs and a bit softly at first, plopped her feet in. Then without hesitation, she jumped into the mud, laughing as it tickled her toes and the soles of her feet. She started moving her feet back and forth, splashing the mud ever so slightly. She looked up and waved at the neighbor who was out walking his dog. She yelled to Trixie, who barked and wagged her tail in response.
Sam yelled, it looks like you're having fun. I hope we didn't spoil it. Shawn giggled and waited until he got closer. Not a problem, she smiled. Do you remember ever doing this as a kid, she asked. There's nothing like losing your feet in some fresh mud. She dug both feet deeper into the mud, laughing louder as it tickled the bottoms of her feet once again.
Sam confessed. Yeah mud was one of my favorite things to play with although mom wasn't too happy by the time I got back inside, he told her. He watched as Shawn continued oozing the mud between her feet, using one foot to rub it on the other and vice versa. He stepped back as she jumped a few times again. They talked more about being kids, growing up, what their favorite toys were and the games they liked to play.
Oh, said Shawn, I used to have these tickle fights with my friends, and I usually won, I could get them screaming with laughter. Sam grinned and told her how he would win the battles with his sisters and their friends. They eyed one another suspiciously and a short silence came between them......
