23! Old man!! No reason to be jealous dude. I was 26 when I was accepted to officer training. And 27 when I got picked up for pilot. 28 now. I showed you what needs to happen. It's not easy!! But doable. I want you to go to the holm center website and download all of the documents for the various ROTC scholarships. Put them in a folder on your desktop and label it whatever call sign you want when you fly. Start filling out the info you know. Then I want you to buy those AFOQT books and put them somewhere where you and everyone that comes by sees them. Create a screen name on that AFOTS website and hangout there at least once before you come here(TMF). The road to commission is based on your own self determination and ambition. Don't quit
The academy is relatively easy to get into to as a prior E. The only draw back is that you spend a minimum 4 years there. And you start from the bottom. You do however get that gorgeous blue ring at the end of 4 years...and the most kick ass training in the world! I did mine at Arizona State. Fun school! To go academy though you must get in before your 22nd bday. As long a you're turing 22 this year in 2011 you're good. https://admissions.usafa.edu/secure/online/Eligibility.htm
I have a buddy at Tuskegee. He likes it.
Stats from the last rated board. No joke with a 20% selection rate...but at least they're still accepting rated positions. Non rated guys didn't even get a shot this year with both boards canceled till Jan 2011. 10% selection rate for the last one in 09 so i'd imagine there are tons of people anxious for another shot. ROTC doesn't have as many applicants because it's not as easy financially so one has a MUCH higher chance of getting in. You also get higher dibs on the jobs too. Academy gets first dibs, then ROTC...then OTS. All strategy bud. Good luck! I did it...you can too. http://www.rs.af.mil/recruiteronline/story.asp?id=123209831
No ROTC while enlisted. They'd null your contract and you'd sign a new one saying that you'll serve 4 years after you grad as an officer. Once you're offered a pilot slot you sign a new contract saying that upon the completion of UPT that you will serve ten years. ROTC isn't easy money wise. Having savings/school loans or a working wife helps. GI Bill and a stipend would help too.
'Sup whicha ? How's it going? Hey, do you plan on going to Bella's in November? I'm trying to see who from the MI group is going to that one 😀. I'm goin!!! (I'm clearly excited about it )
That's just a start. Let me know once you get through all of that and i've got plenty where that came from! The boards are meeting in 2 weeks...so while feasible if you're crazy(like me) you can take the whole year to ensure those Colonel's see a package that knocks their socks off! Getting into officer training is one thing...getting the pilot slot is a WHOLE other game.
I haven't officially started yet. Just a few cessna hours here and there. And a few F-16 orientation flights. I start UPT early next year. What do you do?
