Absolutely. I believe it was the manner of which he went about trying to obtain consent is what made it sour.
Again, I haven't seen the movie or read the books, so I am only going based off reviews.
I can expand on this. I read Jenny Trout's hilarious recap of the first book, and a bit of the second, and it sets off so many red flags. It's not so much the BDSM stuff, that's fairly standard from my limited knowledge of the subject, it's that Christian Grey is really creepy and controlling.
He follows her to a bar after they first meet and takes her to his hotel room after she gets tipsy.
He flies into a rage when she gets a call from a male friend.
When she declines the relationship in an email, he drives to her house, just so he can be sure.
He follows her in his private jet across the country when she goes home to see her parents, just so he can be sure she's not up to something.
When her male boss invites her and the rest of the staff to lunch with him, he shows up and stands over her the whole time so they know she belongs to him, then threatens to buy the whole company so he can fire him if he dares flirt with her.
Also his interest in BDSM is from being abused by an older woman as a child. He's not really the swoon worthy perfect man a lot of the promotional material makes him out to be, and their relationship checks off a lot of the boxes on those "signs your girlfriend/boyfriend is abusive" lists.
Also the whole series is Twilight fanfiction, but with the names changed from "Bella" to "Ana" and "Edward" to "Christian". Literally. It was Twilight fanfiction until she decided to sell it.
