i think backup signals are the best way to get past all the problems, i.e. not being able to form words etc.
you could have a safeword _and_ the two pinch sign _and_ the cough.
by the way- what is rl play?

rl(RL) stands for Real Life. Real life play as opposed to fantasy and faked videos scenes, stories etc.

...of course their not into tickling and wouldn't even consider using a safeword, but thats one incredibly painful way of stopping it.

Well, in the few times I've been tickled, I've found that once I start laughing, there is no hope of me forming comprehensive words.

How imperative it is that the 'Lers be sensitive to their 'Lee's limits. Doesn't matter how you play, safewords or other safety measures aside, you absolutely MUST pay close attention to ALL the signs. Those playing with bondage, check your 'Lee's extremeties for circulation. If their hands/feet are cold, if they're getting that pins-and-needles sensation, it's time for a break while you adjust the restraints, whether they say they want more or not. There are other, subtler signs, too, for those who are caught up in their own happy-place and unable to communicate, and you've got to be aware of them, or else face the shock of making your 'Lee pass out (and the potential consequences). Like Jon said, kids...
