'Power Rangers' defeated

A long-running US children's television series, which is filmed in New Zealand and employs local actors and production crew, is about to be dropped.

Since 2003, Disney-owned Power Rangers has been filmed in several spots around Auckland, including Vector Arena, Drury and Bethells Beach.

Its American production company, Ranger Productions, has a base in the Glen Eden Studio West buildings.

Filming for the 17th season, Power Rangers RPM, began in September and the 32 episodes are due to screen from today in several countries but not New Zealand.

It was cancelled here in 1993 when the Broadcasting Standards Authority deemed it too violent.

The production manager for the show, Sally Campbell, told the Weekend Herald that "at this stage we will not be shooting another season".

Several New Zealand actors have starred in one of the show's six New Zealand seasons, including Sunrise host Oliver Driver, Outrageous Fortune's Antonia Prebble, Go Girls' Anna Hutchison and former Shortland Street stars Miriama Smith, Katrina Devine and Tandi Wright.

Actor Charlie McDermott, who has done the voiceover work for the General Crunch character for the last three years, told the Weekend Herald he had not been told about the cancellation.

"It's a bit of a bummer. These big-budget American companies have got millions and they're using our studios. I'd say it would be the actors who lose out the least. It's all the camera guys, the sound, editing suites ...

"But [the Americans] are used to paying a lot more than they pay us, that's why they come here, their dollar goes a lot further. And they have it down pat. Once you've been here for a while you really refine your processes and make some money."

The Power Rangers contract is worth a substantial amount to post-production companies Digipost, which edits the video, and Inside Track, which produces all the sound effects.

Well, to be honest it's a shame that so many people are going to lose their jobs over this.

But in fairness, the 'Power Ranger' franchise has been on thin ice for a very long time.

Ah well, I'll be sad to see it go. I spent many an hour watching the Green Ranger summon a massive Robot Dinosaur... (mighty morphin' was the only way to go)

THANK GOODNESS!!

No longer will young children run around me karate fighting and accidentally hitting me below the belt with their impression of a roundhouse karate kick.

BURY IT!!! Bury the Power Rangers like an Atari "ET" cartridge.

That is all.

A little harsh man, I'll take it you were one of the many to take a round house to the crotch then?

I could have said worse....trust me I was kind.

And yes, too many to remember..especially working as a youth center director for a YMCA. Horrid memories......

I never took to it myself. It had some good points, but I always prefered the Galaxy Rangers. Still there will be many who will miss it.

Pink Ranger was HAWT!!!!!!!!

I was really into Power Rangers back when I was around 7. I still have the original Megazord, ALL of the Thunder Zords and the Falcon Zord around here somewhere. I probably watched Power Rangers: The Movie at least 10 times after it came out on VHS.

With that said, it's way overdue for cancellation. Even as a kid I could tell that it was starting to go downhill once the second movie came out.

My nephews will be crushed and my family will rejoice in not having to buy 2 of every zord and ranger

As far as I'm concerned it died after Mighty Morphin'... there were no other Power Rangers.

I think I still have the first movie (the one with the purple guy who got all the grown-ups stoned or something) somewhere.

Jeez, I didn't even know it still aired. As far as I knew, it stopped coming on when I was in high school.

Jesus! Was I the ONLY kid in the world who liked that game???

Well...Looking back in retrospect...What a stupid game. So pointless...Even for Atari.:sowrong:

Yeah, I guess it sucked pretty bad.

Well, the episode where that guy killed the couple for the yacht and then dumped their bodies into the ocean was bound to offend some viewers.

Wow... now that was stiff.

Am I the only person who actually enjoyed them when I was a kid?

I mean granted, series 17 is beating the dead horse, but still, it was a fun half hour of mindless ass-kickery.

They prettymuch started REALLY sucking after (or around) the S.P.D. season--ESPECIALLY when the Red ranger gets a new motor bike.

*BOOM!* "HIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! *BOOM!* "OH YEAH! YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! PUNCH IT! " *BOOM!* "LAAAAAAAAAAAAA-ZZEERRRRRRRRRRRSS!" *BOOM!* "WHOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! HIIIIIII YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!* *BOOM!* (repeat for 5 to 10 mins..in slow-mo)

Now, compare that to the older seasons:

"ALRIGHT, RANGERS, BLADE-BLASTERS, NOW!"

"READY!"

"FIRE!!"

*BOOM!*

And you couldn't go wrong with the fight scene songs from the older seasons (after...I think "In Space" all they had was just music..no cool songs during the fights)

Shoot! I lthink thats a very good run for any show. Theres so many shapes, colors, and dinosuars you can mimic. Although I have to say I havn't seen a show in ages. A guy my age looking at teen girls is creepy. But I do agree with Benray, back in the day, Pink Ranger ruled! So like all good things must end. *sniff.
