This had been coming for a great many years. Since the late 90's we have been digging our own grave, everyone of us. Whether you are a hedge fund investor with billions in other peoples money or a regular Joe, we have allowed this to happen, and we get stuck fixing it.
The rules for investing in risky things changed about ten years ago. Congress in their wisdom (and ours since we put the bastards there, especially if you didn't make it a point to vote that makes you extra guilty)made what got us in trouble perfectly legal. Greed did the rest because no one thought that it would get this bad. Hon, when you are trading oil for three times what it is worth to drill, pump, and refine, there is something fundamentally wrong. Same thing goes for other investments. Short selling, which as it was done until recently was illegal ten years or so ago. The rules changed and to make a long story short, huge investors could make or break a company by driving their stock price into the ground, and they didn't own a single share of stock to trade.
The housing market? People got loans that had no business getting them and the lenders, thinking that they could cash in and sell those loans therefore avoiding any risk, helping the matter by making it worse. When people can't make the payments someones got to cover the losses. Banks go tits up.
And so on.
There were a lot of reasons that we are in a economic mess and everyone of them perfectly legal. That needs to change, and permanently. The people that manipulated the rules should be jailed, their wealth stripped and returned to those they stole it from. Maybe it is time for a little Roosevelt socialism but if left unchecked, this will not pass.
It will only get much worse.
