Baseball Winter Meetings Deals Thread

Atlanta Journal Constitution is reporting on their site, as well as the Braves on their site, that the Braves have reached agreement with first baseman Troy Glaus on a contract. Glaus was injured most of 2009, but he is only 33 years old, and has good power.

When the Braves signed Mike Hampton in 2002, after Tom Glavine left, Hampton was coming off a horrible season in Colorado. In the first two years Hampton was with the Braves, he actually pitched pretty well, before having all the arm problems and surgeries.

The Glaus signing is an interesting one for the Braves. It means that Adam Laroche, their free agent first baseman, is definitely gone. If Glaus is healthy, he can give the Braves some much needed power.

I'm cautiously optimistic about this signing.

Interesting move with an upside if he's healthy. With Atlanta signing Glaus, I get the feeling that LaRoche could possibly land in Baltimore. The Orioles still have a need for a power bat at first and LaRoche could probably hit a few bombs in that ballpark. But who knows, really? I'm sure Baltimore won't be the only suitors.

This isnt a winter meetings deal, but I just read online that the New York Mets have signed outfielder Jason Bay to a four year contract worth $65 million.

The Bay signing is important for the Mets, as he adds some much needed power. (36 homers in 2009) to a team that hit only 95 home runs last season.

that has to be demoralizing to a degree. Braves get Troy glaus coming off injury and archrival Mets get Jason Bay. I bet TF4F had a field day with that one . lol

Seagulls, the Mets got a good player in Bay, but I still think that the Braves have a better team then the Mets if both teams were matched up against each other and healthy.

Mets big three pitching- Santana, Maine, Pelfrey.

Johan is consistent. He'll win 15 games. Pelfrey can be pretty good, but Maine has had a lot of injuries.

Braves big three- Hudson, Hanson, Jurrgens.

Jurrgens has had two great seasons for the Braves, and should only get better. Hudson was injured much of last year, but should be healthy now, and is a consistent winner. Hanson was lights out last year for the Braves, but one always worries about the Soph slump.

The Mets do have a better bullpen than the Braves. Frankie Rodriguez is almost automatic in the ninth when he's right. Wagner is old, but can still pitch.

The Philles should win the NL East fairly easily, especially with Roy Halliday there now, and all that power. My picks for 2010 would be Philly wins the division in a walk, Braves second and hopefully the wild card, and the Mets third.

my point was more or less the Braves ''reach'' for a bargain who has been injured most of the last few years . Then ask him to move positions. There is no guarantee he can play 1ST base .

you have potential of having solid rotation. That being said , Braves trade off best starting pitcher to Yanks. Hanson has chance to be a top of the rotation guy, yet lets see him pitch more before we annoint him a great pitcher. Hudson was injured majority of last season so he is a question mark as well. right now Jurrgens is the surest thing Braves have.

Rangers make two nice additions on free-agent market

Vlad Guerrero will be primary DH and bat 4th behind Josh Hamilton

Khalil Greene was signed to be backup utility infielder. These are two nice additions considering Rangers are going through ownership change

The Mets are trying to sign Tom Seaver and Sandy Koufax to bloster their starting rotation. 😱

After two years with the Houston Astros, Miguel Tejada returns to the Baltimore Orioles. One year contract to play 3rd base, while the team waits for minor leaguer Josh Bell to emerge. This move caught me a bit off-guard. The signing was mentioned as a possibility, but I sort of thought Baltimore was done with him after the whole steroid controversy. Eh, at the very least, he provides a quality bat for our corner infield.

Yeah really. I thought they were trying to get younger? They've got Adam Jones and a couple of other guys.

Any idea on what the O's strategy is?

Stopgap move for now. They have Josh Bell down in the minors, a third baseman they got from the Dodgers system when they traded George Sherrill. He seems like a good prospect, but they want to give him a bit more time to develop. It surprised me a bit, but I honestly don't mind the move since it isn't long-term. Players like Jones, Markakis, Wieters and Reimold should be the focal point of the offense for years to come, joining the likes of the always steady Brian Roberts. Tejada might not have much power anymore, but I'll definitely take the 80-90 RBI's he likely brings with him.
