Being a Spelling-Nazi on the net...

It's pure hell.

For many, many years I struggled against the grain - mentally correcting words as I would peruse pages upon pages on the internet, promising myself that I would never fall prey to the madness that others reveled in: Spewing out vomitus w/out ever...EVER...checking what one had written for spelling mistakes; grammar, punctuation, etc. I understand that many people use the net like they use the telephone or some other type of communication device, I just don't subscribe to it...

Why? Because I'm not talking to only one person here. And I rather enjoy making making a product look nice, even if it is the written word.

Hence, it was a daily vow and consequent struggle to maintain order in me own feeble mind whilst I read what others had to say. I'm not bashing members on the TMF here, btw - I find that most peeps, esp. the regulars here, do a fine job of putting something up that is worthwhile to read, both in style and content.

So, again, I fought the good fight for as long as I could. But, alas, resistance is futile...

I have found, over this past year, that I am now misspelling words that I used to know quite well due to cont'd use of the net. And it's not only web forums, people. You and I both know we have seen entire web sites that could've been written better by 4 yr olds.

To combat this, I've taken to reading the newspaper and books again, in my spare time. I hope it helps, bekus I im freekin' oot hear, gise, yanowatammeen?

Anybody else having problems after so much extended use of the WWW, or is it just me?

Cheers.😀

I think when people abbreviate WAY too much in their messages, it gets totally hard to read, that even someone speaking in tongues to me makes a whole lot more sense! The irony is (being Filipino) that I can read, spell, write, etc. a whole lot better than some so-called English-speaking natives. That said, I'm pretty sure that any intelligent person in their right mind only writes like this at internet forums, chat, e-mail, etc. Otherwise if they did that on their work, etc. they'll be in big trouble!

EDIT: Forgot to mention. It's probably down to the mobile/cell phone culture. I know text messaging is incredibly rife in the UK. Dunno how much in proportion it's used in the USA.

Isn't it funny in sci-fi tv and movies, when a lost race is discovered, their language has de-volved.....and now here it's happening on the net? It's the eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeend of the world as we KNOW it!

The Sean Man

I love language too much to amputate and disfigure it. But some abbreviations are useful and don't hurt language, like LOL, IMO, OTOH etc (a latin abbreviation...). After all, abbreviations and acronyms have been a significant part of America's culture even before the internet days. Let's take LA: It's original name was "La Ciudad de Nuestra Senora de los Angeles de Porciuncula"!

But I'm not one to joke about disabilities, and legasthenia (sp?) is just one of them... 🙄

It's getting to the point where, should I find something funny in real life, I'll substitute a laugh with "lol" or "roffle!" (rofl).

I need help. My mind is going 404...

How the f***ing hell did I miss this thread for so long??? :wow: 😕 :wow: 😕 :wow: 😕 😱

As anyone can hear from Steve, I am a MASSIVE spelling-nazi. I also have to agree that the two biggest spelling f**k-ups that REEEEEEAAAAALLLLLLLLLYYYYYYY piss me off is misuse of there/they're/their and your/you're.

Am I the only person in the world who uses punctuation marks and capital letters when texting proper sentences? How much of a frikking dweeb does that make me? :dropatear

It always helps to remember that in this world of people of such lesser intellect, your own you're on.

I think my post really does intel to much.

Wanker. 🙄

While we're here, I just can't help but mention two wonderful pictures which are displayed in the forepages of the new David Icke book, Tales From The Time Loop. They show two nice gentlemen who evidently belong to the pro-war lobby and are waving placards at the camera. One proclaims...

WAR = PEECE

and the other, held jointly by a "Go USA!" sign, says...

GET A BRAIN... YOU MORANS!!!

Need I say any more? 😀

*I* am a serious spelling nazi. I probably waste a lot of time noticing misspellings and being irritated by them. I wish I didn't bother, but it's involuntary.

English really is weird. Take, for example, "it's". Strangely, "it's" isn't a possessive. It's a contraction of "it is". The possessive is "its". Now, I can understand someone forgetting this when they've been writing a huge and fascinating politics/religion thread for hours and hours... 🙂

What I can't understand is how anyone can have misspellings on their résumé or the sign over their store. When I see that I don't hesitate to label that person "idiot" in my mind.

Don't mistake a spelling error for a typing error. 😛 Amazing what can happen to your fingers after 4 hours of solid typing; especially when the information is just ripping out of your soul in a torrent.

What an interesting torrent it was! It inspired me to google "Illuminati" and check out http://www.conspiracyarchive.com/. I read the page and I got to this about the Information Awareness Office:

"Well it seems that this super-spy agency wants to live up to it's Big Brother label. So much so, that it has officially adopted the Illuminati Seal as it's own."

In my mind, right there, the credibility of the website and its writer was automatically reduced a notch. The website and the forum thread both aim to inform and convince intelligent readers. But there's a HUGE difference between a brilliant thread with typos (love it regardless, Jim!) and a website with errors. I think writing a website is equivalent to writing a book, but I don't see the same care taken to proofread and edit material before publishing. I may be some kind of dinosaur that will be extinct by the next generation!

People can't even properly spell the keywords they're searching for on the web. So, as administrator of my company's website, I add common misspellings of our keywords to the site's meta tags so people can find it!
