the drummer from Def Leppard........the guy only has one friggin arm, cmon.

Rick Allen? Nice story but...

All of his rhythms are easy to create 4/4 rock beats. Replace the right arm snare hits with a right leg trigger pedal, and you're all set. Not to take anything away from Rick's drive and ambition to continue playing, that deserves a hell of an accolade. But best drummer ever? Hardly.

For my money...and this will be no surprise to anyone who knows me, but Rush's Neil Peart is widely considered to be the world's greatest living percussionist. A lot of drummers can pull off alternate time signatures, but Neil designs the songs that contain them to flow from one seemingly incompatible time signature to another without the listener even realizing the change.

check out his solo on the "Vapor Trails" tour, available on the "Rush in Rio" DVD, and on YouTube with some quick searching, and you'll see a 9+ minute journey through the history of percussion. Neil arranges his solos as far more than just bashing as fast as he can. They are songs in and of themselves with structures bridges, choruses and passages. I won't even get into the fact that he writes 99% of the band's lyrics, is a published author of several very good books, since this is a thread about drumming.

I would suggest, however, that you check out the DVD he put out "Anatomy of a Drum Solo". It'll blow your mind. 🙂 Additionally, give a listen to the Grammy-nominated instrumental "Malignant Narcissism" from the 2007 "Snakes and Arrows" album. A last minute addition to the album, it was recorded mostly in one take, with Peart playing on his practice 4-piece kit. People I've played it for cannot believe he plays this song on a four piece without having to prove it to them.

(And a nod to my buddy Kered on Gene Krupa...a legend that Peart himself lists as a major influence.)

I can't say off the top of my head, but I can tell you that Meg White is one of the worst drummers around.

Got to ask you Dave.... have you ever played the drums? I got a 5 piece with 12 cymbals. "get a left kick pedal with a trigger and your set?" easier said than done....how "easy" would it be to do a roll across the toms with one arm and using a kick pedal?

Oh, don't get me wrong. I'm not saying it's easy at all. And again, I take nothing away from Rick's ability to do what he does. Don't take what I said to be disparaging at all. I do give him a lot of respect. But, let's assume he never lost his arm...it would still be the same basic 4/4 rock beats he did before losing it. A good rock drummer, to be sure, and worthy of respect for continuing. And, to be completely honest, I always loved the tones of the drums on Def Lep songs. They always sounded very good...piercing, solid with an awesome snare sound that sometimes gets lost in hard rock.

But, I still stand by Neil Peart. It's not just towards Rick Allen...I put Neil above everybody. He's just in a class by himself.

If your looking for the best drummer EVER, not just rock, it's the late Buddy Rich, bar none.

..but if you want to go a little more mainstream....JOHN BONHAM......NEIL PEART

drums

if your going to talk about great drummers, Buddy Rich is the all around number one. The guy never took a lesson in his life and he could do one handed drum rolls. Stewart copeland is amazing, as is Dennis Chambers of Santana/Funkadelic, and Jon Blackwell who plays with Prince and Justin Timberlake. Its really all about preference, really. Some guys got chops like Thomas Lang, some guys got style like Stanton Moore, and some guys have both.

Blah blah. The concept of "best drummer" across the board is ridiculous -- different genres of music requires different chops. So to the Buddy Rich fans, an early jazz/rock best (same with Krupa for big band and beyond) -- the Peart worshippers can be sure he's among the tops for prog rock (but the first Rush album sans Peart is also great -- if a bit more bluesy and simple) -- Rat Scabies from The Damned is a great punk drummer --- as far as metal -- what sort of metal? Gene Hogland is a great drummer from early thrashers Dark Angel as well as new extreme music like Strapping Young Lad ...

But Rick Allen sucks a bag of penguin dicks ... :stickout

Sorry I should have put "in your opinion". and to say Rick Allen sucks a pile of penguin dicks is insane. Def lep sold millions of albums, sold out arenas and had like 15 top 10 hits. you sir are simply jealous. Sure he may not be the best neil peart is prolly the best, but try playin with one arm.

Keep in mind I know next to nothing about music...

That being said though, I thought Eric Carr was a very good drummer, along with Nicko McBrain.

Buddy Rich was the inspiration for many of the drummers mentioned, including Peart. i do agree that these "who's the best" threads are often a matter of personal taste.

Gotta get on board with Carl Palmer as well. 🙂

I myself, am a drummer. I have been for a few years, and the best drummer I have ever heard is Lyle Cooper from The Faceless.

He pulls off beats I have yet to hear Neil Peart play, he's that good. No joke.

Bruford is the man! Don't forget Carl Palmer and Keith Moon. Bernad Purdie is also really creative.

I caught Carl Palmer a few years ago at the Astoria in Deal. The man is insanely good ... and so was his band.

On further thought.....I should not have made this thread. It turned evil very quickly

I'd go with Mike Portnoy, from Dream Theater. He's like an octopuss or something, some of the stuff he plays are really complex.
But I also love Deep Purple, so Ian Paice will allways have a place as some of the best drumers ever in my metal loving heart.

Neil Peart or Lars from Metalica

Heard that Buddy Rich was a prick to his band.
