My question is, if we can no longer update this website, how long till it ceases to function due to being outdated?
Can we prevent this by creating a brand new website for the Tickling Forum?
Sure, come up with the several thousand dollars for the new software license for an up to date platform, Hire someone to install it on a server and get it functioning (HDS our tech specialist is sorta busy these days for huge projects and may not be available for periods of time) so toss another K or so into the cost pile.
Then you'll have a new forum that has no history, lacks the dozens of links across the web, and has no google profile. And no member base either. No media, no posts, just a blank slate.
So it is doable.
Our hope is upgrade the forums software, and preserve its history, media and all that in place. I just costs a shit ton.
Historically Jeff has funded this place out of his own pocket for the last 20 years, and he could probably buy a pretty damned nice HOUSE for what he's spent here in the last two decades. He's been trying to raise funds for the software and slowly they are accruing. But it takes time.
Almost no one here realizes how expensive it is to keep a site like this up. No one is charged a dime to post, look at the media, use the chat, or whatever. The generous advertisers like MTJ and C4S help defer a measure of the monthly operating cost, but not all, so Jeff is still writing a check every month.
None of the staff that takes care of things (Like HDS above, me, or the other mods) is paid for any of the time they drop here every day. And on big jobs like software updates you might be asking for a full 24 work hours for HDS that he will see nothing from but bitching about down time and the millions of little issues that have to be stamped out later.
There is a real reason there are few other major fetish oriented sites like us on the web, it's hard to maintain on a zero dollar budget.
I really regret that the aging of the forums software makes things harder to use here. Trust me I'd love a shiny new forum with all the newest tools and functions that have come along. It's frustrating to have to juggle browsers to see a post or media here, it's annoying to not be able to attach something to a post for no reason anyone can see. Hopefully we'll manage an upgrade in a year or three.
Until then the forum is basically stable and functional on all the basic levels.
