Lone Star Beer has been called The National Beer of Texas. In the soft drink world that title goes to Dr Pepper.
In the 1880's Charles Alderton was a pharmacist working at Morrison's Old Corner Drug Shop. Alderton liked to tinker in the soda fountain in his spare time and first served his concoction in 1885. In those days customers called the drink a "Waco".
Alderton was more interested in his pharmacy work than his new drink and later suggested that Morrison and Robert S, Lazenby, a beverage chemist, take charge. They formed the Artesian Mfg. & Bottling Co. in 1891. Morrison is credited with coining the Dr Pepper name a few years later but why he chose it is unknown.
Dr Pepper made its national debut at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. That fair also saw the introduction of hamburgers and frankfurters served on buns, and the ice cream cone.
