dear knightshade, you may feel differently when the time comes.
i gave my opinions, and the best respondent was dave. he's lived through a tragedy, and he feels he woun't have cloned if it was avaliable.
of course there is a but. and this one is; just cause some are against an idea, doesn't mean the idea is bad, or wrong. i still want to see cloning become a reality, even if only so the people already alive might be able to have new organs grown to replace ones that were damaged in accidents, etc. think of the savings if dialysis patients could get new kidneys. people with emphasemy to get new lungs. these are diseases that we already treat, clonning might make it easier to treat.
and as an old saying goes "my minds made up, don't confuse me with the facts".

Story of my life Hal, story of my life...lol! Or.."great minds think alike" and you just happen to type a bit faster? I like that one better...just read a story on a cloned kitten...seems it's behaving nearly the same as its "ancestor". What puzzled me was that I thought that ALL kittens behaved about the same at 8 weeks old...perhaps a cat fancier could correct me if I'm wrong? Q

Nah, they're all pretty much alike. Never on the right side of a door, choose the middle of the carpet to barf instead of the kitchen linoleum, shed all over everything (I've swept up fur balls bigger than the cat), claw the furniture to rags. Don't get me wrong - I like cats. They're real tasty if you marinade them overnight in red wine with garlic and olive oil, and then slow roast them.

A healthy 2-week-old cloned pig sits in its cage at the Animal Technology Institute on April 19 in the northern Taiwan city of Miaoli. This pig is one of three female pigs that were cloned from genetic material of both human and pig cells into a 3-year-old pig. Researchers are claiming that Taiwan is the first to clone from two different cells instead of the common one-cell process. Scientists hope that the process of merging human cells with pig cells will allow the human body to accept pig organs which are the most common in animal-to-human organ replacement.

Apart from the fact that Rambo's a fictional character...

They just won't be the same people. I don't know how to stress this enough, but the experiences of their formative years will cause them to grow up to be completely different personalities from the original. The only way a cloned Hitler will become the same dictator as the original is if you reconstruct Hitler's entire life from birth to shape him. Without being raised in Mother Schicklegruber's home, serving as an Austrian Non-Com in WWI, and having an incestuous affair with his niece that ends with a suspicious death, Adolf v2.0 is just as likely to follow his dream of becoming an artist and never once contemplate military conquest and eugenics programs.

Use twins as an example. I've known several pairs of identical twins, and they display remarkable differentiation of personality. Genetically, the may be the same person, but the most basic observation reveals that they are nothing alike mentally and emotionally. Clones will be the same situation: Who we are is far more than what is written in our physical DNA. "The Boys from Brazil" may have been a great movie, but it's still only a movie and your fears are pretty much groundless.

Well, again, that depends. If my opinion of the soul holds true, the possibility exists that it would be cloned, too, indirectly. Twins are different from clones. Once again, just a theory, but their personalities both started off empty, that is, with no development. If the soul were to be cloned, the clone would begin with the same personality, but then its own experiences would be added to the existing. So I agree that it would not result in the same person, maybe very close, though, as it seems that personality becomes defined early in life.
