Friendly reminder that just because you don't hear anything being said about a term being offensive or acceptable, that doesn't mean nothing is being said: it most likely means it is not being heard. Friendly reminder that just because something is not offensive to you or to a majority, that doesn't mean it isn't offensive at all. Friendly reminder that just because something has been around for a long time, that doesn't mean it is okay or socially acceptable. Friendly reminder that just because you don't believe something to be true, doesn't mean it is false.
The Redskins name, and the Indians logo, have been problematic for years. There have been people talking about wanting these to change, and about them being offensive, but perhaps their voices are being drowned out by all of the other voices speaking of all of these other more "pressing" or prominent issues. I'm not an expert, and I am not claiming to be; however, to my knowledge, the term "redskins" is a slur. I know of no tribe that calls themselves by that name, but again, I do not know everything.
There have been recent talks about having Snyder change the name because it is offensive, and we have been living in a more progressive time where we are trying to address problematic attitudes and speech. Part of the reason why it's being spoken about is, obviously, because it's a huge sports franchise. Another reason why it's a problem? Rather than address the issue, Snyder turned around an announced he was going to start an organization to benefit the Native Americans that he decided to name the "Washington Redskins Original Americans Foundation," which just comes across as a joke and more of a publicity stunt than actual sincerity or thought towards the conversation. But this is just my opinion.
