Did you know... (random fact thread!)

In colonial times, bathing habits were almost non-existant. Women would use beeswax to hide blemishes on their faces. If something would happen to the beeswax (cracks, runs etc), it was considered impolite to stare at it. If you were caught staring, you were promptly told to "mind your own beeswax".

Are you absolutely sure about that one? I've read from several sources that Van Gogh was on one of his frequent absinthe binges when he performed his famous self-surgery. In any case, we both agree that the "for love of a woman" story was bullshit, anways.
I guess I'm not 100% sure. I read it out of a trivia book that I have. 'The Unbelievable Truth!' written by Jeff Rovin. I thought that since it was from a book source rather than just the internet, it was more accurate. I guess not. According to the book, after van Gogh came to, he had wrapped the severed section of ear and presented it to a prostitute named Rachel. She wasn't fond of his paintings, and he wanted to show her that there was worse things he could give her.

Did you know... that though we're taught in school that there are seven continents, there are really only six, geographically speaking. The boundary between Europe and Asia is artificial, the work of ancient Greek mapmakers who believed the two regions were separated almost entirely by water from the Aegean to the North Sea. When the truth became known, it wasn't enough to displace tradition ... or European resistance to the idea of being considered part of Asia.

There are six pounds of pennies in the average American home.

There are an estimated 140 billion pennies in circulation.

A roll of coins wrapped in paper is called rouleau.

Because of the weight of its face a penny is slightly more lokely to land on *heads* then *tails*.

Did you know... that Marie Antoinette did not say, "Let them eat cake," to poor French people who had no bread. It had been uttered 53 years before, in 1740, by a princess who, according to Jean-Jacques Rousseau in Confessions, "when...told the peasants had no bread, replied, 'Let them eat cake.'"
Obviously, one of the anti-monarchists familiar with the statement attributed it to the Queen to rouse the populace against her. And successfully, too, since she was beheaded shortly thereafter.
