My mother got me enrolled at the YMCA when I was very young, and to this day I love to swim. During the summer months I occasionally go to a local park that has an olympic sized pool and swim laps. Its a fabulous cardio workout.
I learned how to swim at the YMCA when I was 6 or 7 but I haven't swum... swam... swimmed... I haven't swome in like 25 years, so I don't know how I'd do now. I could probably manage not to drown, though. 😎
When you're raised in Southern California (especially the coastal parts), swim lessons are often part of the standard curriculum offered at the pre-school level. Pools are everywhere, and going to the beach is a standard family outing, so it's just assumed everybody needs to know how to swim from a pretty early age.
It was sort of a shock to me when I met people from the Mid-West or plains states who never learned.
I learned to swim starting when I was around 5. The summer camp I went to tried to teach us but wasn't much help so I kind of taught myself. When I was 15 I became a lifeguard and also taught swimming lessons to people ages 3-up for four years.
I'm actually not surprised about this fact because I have known a lot of people that can not swim or don't do it well. When I was teaching my most popular class was actually my adult class and they were the most grateful too to be there.
