while on vacation, we visited a place that had several shops, restaurants, all on a series of board walks overlooking water..along the walks were various fish feeding stations like bubblegum or candy machines, but you buy fish food to feed the fish below..well every time i peered over the railings, those fish, (and they were huge suckers..) would be right there, looking up at me with their mouths wide open..begging for food...

how's that for brains??

The fish were there because the people liked to watch them eat which resulted in a constant supply of food being located in one place on a regular basis.

That's okay. We'll get you a nice fish. 😀 Just ask it when you're lost.

I used to have a Paroon Shark (they aren't really sharks, they're just called that). He was about 3 foot long and I used to call him my 'wet dog' because he loved to be petted (in fact he got irate and banged against the tank when you ignored him), had to be hand fed (if you didn't, the food would just float there for days), and used to hang out by the end of the tank where I'd sit and work out guitar parts.

He was pretty intelligent and he wasn't always looking for food. Sometimes he just wanted the attention.

For the record, it is entirely true that fish have brains. Osservano!

Fish do have brains. Every animal life form above hydras has a central nervous system. The question isn't about a brain, but about intelligence. The question is whether or not they have a mind.

Fish, like nearly every other creature with a real brain, can learn. If these fish find a source of easy food that is readily and in the case of a tourist attraction like that, nearly perpetually available, why in God's name would they leave?

They can learn smiple things, but they have no concept of numbers or symbolic recall. They are not, by definition, intelligent.

That isn't intellegance, that's instinct. What's a freshwater fish's main source of food? Bugs. And where do fish find bugs? On the top of the water. How can they see them? shadows. So living in an area constantly bombarted by bugs, human interaction, a couple of thousands of years....eh...?

gee whiz guys..i'm trying to make a point about why we shouldn't cook lobstah's alive...grrrr

and ticklekat bingoooooooooooooooooo oo tickle God they did look like that..

nerrad lol...

But... alive is the only way to cook lobster! Besides, these're fish we're talkin' about. Not lobsters. 😉

oo Sammi is that you?? but but...lobstah's are fishhhhhhhhhhhhhh grrrrrrr just fishies with shells...and my point was that if they have brains..then they have feelings..and how would you like to be plopped head first in boiling hot water..

love the new name..but i liked your old name as well..

Sì! 'Tis I, with my new, not-so-cutesy name. Aaah. So liberating... Glad you like it. 😀

And lobsters aren't fish. They're too armored. And a brain doesn't imply feelings. Besides, if it's dumb enough to be caught and eaten.... 😉

wow super cool..i knew you would have a neato cool pet like that..and you are right..while at Ripley's Aquarium on vacation, i had a stingray who flirted with me..they do have personalities, which therefore means they have brains i.e. they have intelligence of a sort...

and Bella Donna..you do know that you are poison now right? 😉 and hmm well the poor lobstah's can't help when half the swimming area is one big net..i mean what chance do those poor things have? :ggrin:

izzy, you are just so sweet. I bet you even step over bugs on the sidewalk.
I see your perspective here but lobstahs are delish and one of the best sources of protein. They go out almost instantly in boiling water so the end is quick. They only have a rudimentary brain and really don't think about what's happening. They are instintive creatures that live their lives largely by the principal of millions of years of DNA coding.
As much as I agree with your humanitarian orientation, I must have my lobstah. Please don't deny me my lobstah! I'm begging you!
Now to quote Marlon Brando, "Get the buttah."

^ well i can be sweet..and lately i can also be rather bitchy..i guess cuz of my mood swings etc due to the change..sighs..

but yes i do actually step around bugs etc...and also while trying to kill a wasp once, the damn thing wouldn't die, and i burst into tears as i had to try and finish the job...i am sweet when it comes to innocent creatures...i've been super sensitive for a long time...won't go into details..but i hate seeing something killed..

however back to the silliness of this thread...those fishies looked so huge and ferocious i was half afraid if i fell into the water, they would eat me up...eeks..i believe they are carp..

l

You mean this thing? It doesn't even have teeth. It might fin you real bad, though...
