I was raised in a pretty strict Irish-Catholic environment and for most of my life, I did do the whole fish on fridays, giving up certain things for Lent, etc.
As an adult, I no longer identify as Catholic and prefer to have a more agnostic view on such things. I am not so omniscient that I have the knowledge of whether there is an afterlife or not, a God or not, and I'm not smart enough to nail down anything science hasn't already. But I'm open to suggestions lol.
That said, I do have a respect for the traditions of Catholic religion and people. I don't give up anything for Lent or avoid meat on Fridays, but I do spend time with family and enjoy the day for what it really is to a lot of people when you boil it down: quality time with loved ones and good food.
Interesting, so, do you still maintain good relations with your family? I ask not just because I'm curious but because I grew up in a household that wasn't very religious (at best my father/mother identified with Buddhism and the Tao but they take each with a gain of salt). I guess I'm kinda fortunate in that regard as I'm lesbian and in a relationship with another woman (to the point were we're planning our upcoming wedding) and I don't know how my parents would have reacted to this news if they had been deeply religious.
