To those who don´t know, Lord Hugh Thomas was a member of the english parliament in 19th century with very strong ties to spain. He wrote several essays mainly about the spanish civil war, spanish colonization and slavery. I did no research to see what were is intentions about spain...but his stance about the UK should be pretty obvious 🙂
All in all, I didn´t like the way you said what you said like if we were the bad guys in some movie. We were not! We had our part in the movie and acted it as best as we could considering the moral standards of those times.
Sory for the long post
You are right you were not the only bad guys in the movie. Everybody was including the Africans. The Portuguese Empire was not better than the Spanish or the British Empires or the African Empires. Given the chance they all were equally cruel, as Hugh Thomas correctly shows.
Hugh Thomas was born in Windsor in 1931 (20th century); he studied in Cambridge and in the Sorbona, has taught in the Royal Military Academy of Sandhurst and in the University of Reading.
He became internationally know with his 1961 book “The Spanish war”, followed by others. In 1981 he was made knighted as Lord Thomas of Swynnerton.
I refer you to his book, “The slave trade” 1997. He was introduced to the slave trade in the Atlantic, by the Prime Minister of Trinidad Doctor Eric Williams. Is an academic work extreme well documented, and your can trace in it every reference made in my early post.
About the way I say, you are also right, looking it in the now it was unnecessary.
As an explanation during my time in the UK I had an English/Culture class with many other students from everywhere (including ex-colonies from Portugal). Everyone was supposed to say something about his/her country. One Portuguese, in his turn, walk over the front and upon opening a world map, with everything that was Portuguese Empire label in pink he stated “All this was ours the best Empire ever”. That started a fight in what was supposed to be a get together to know each other that went almost out of control and poisoned many relationships. I still many years later do not understand how somebody could have been so idiotic.
I reacted against your poster out of that memory. But you are not that cretin so I was wrong, my apologies.
