Hey folks. I've never seen the 1984 version of A Nightmare On Elm Street. Shocking, I know. But a couple weeks ago I did see the 2010 remake with Jackie Earle Haley. So, I think I know who might win this debate, especially among the classic horror movie fans, but which Freddy gets your vote? Robert Englund or Jackie Earle Haley ? I ask because I haven't seen Englund so I have no comparison. Should I watch the original? Lemme know please and thanks,

Bug 🙂

The original is now a comedy classic. It's not scary at all and is kind of embarrassingly bad at times. But when it came out it was terrifying.

Englund is a more charismatic Freddy and was just so much more fun to watch. The newer version is too serious and too generic a bad guy. He lacks the fun that Englund brought to the character.

While it may not be considered very scary by today's standarts I think the original is worth watching anyway, it's a very good movie and Robert Englund is a much better Freddy in my opinion!

Btw congratulations on your 1000 post milestone 🙂

Bob Englund is a true character, and brings this giddy insanity to Freddy that you don't get from Haley.

Haley is an excellent actor, but he's either just not fully compatible with the character of Freddy, or the direction is bad.

I only saw a tiny bit of the remake, and I didn't like it. I found the Freddy was a little bit generic, as someone already said. Grr, kill, kill, etc. (Not a fully fair judgement because I only saw a small part)

As a teenager, I was a HUGE fan of Englund's Freddy. Those films have a tone all of their own. His creative ways of offing people are extremely memorable (particularly MINOR SPOILERS the 'video game' murder of the sixth movie ("Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare"), the 'puppet on a string' murder from the third film ("Dream Warriors"), and the motorcycle death (second film, "Freddy's Revenge", if my memory serves me correctly).

Also that raspy voice was trademark.

Oh, and just for fun, this music video that was released around the same time as the third movie, which features Freddy being defeated through the power of 80'S METAL:

I hate Freddy in the sense that he's effective as a bad guy. Despite my hatred of a child killing evil sh*t, I have to admit that Englund plays a GOOD evil sh*t.

My hatred of said evil sh*t is why I love that song Senshi posted so much <3

That's a cool video Senshi. Ya know, I've seen the video game death clip before and I just assumed it was from the first film. I just recently found out it was from the last one.

Yeah, they made a whole bunch of Englund films. 😛 If I remember correctly, this is how they went - and bear in mind I'm doing all this from memory, and it's been years, so I could be a little off, anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong:

Nightmare on Elm Street - The first one. Bit more of a "horror" flick - more gore, less comedy. Notable for being Johnny Depp's first film.

NoES2: Freddy's Revenge(?) - Sequel, slightly less intense story, Freddy's twisted "humour"starting to take shape.

NoES3: Dream Warriors - One of my favourites. Set mainly in an asylum and based around affected teens trying to learn dream control. Freddy's humour is in full swing by now ("welcome to prime time, bitch!").

NoES4 - I know I've seen this, but I honestly remember almost nothing about it. I may only have seen it once or twice.

NoES5: The Dream Child - Remember very little of this one. The idea was Freddy was getting ready to pass the torch. By now, I think the humour was starting to be more prevalent than the 'horror' aspect.

Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare - One of my favourites. A group of potential victims endeavour to take Freddy down permanently. Very entertaining - up there with Dream Warriors for me.

Wes Craven's New Nightmare - Sort of an anomaly. Fourth-wall-breaking film in which Englund plays both himself AS Freddy's actor, and Freddy himself. This one was more about suspense than comedy, if memory serves me. I wasn't hugely impressed.

Freddy VS Jason -The film I'd been waiting for since I was 12 years old. Your IQ will drop a dozen or so points when you watch it, but in my opinion, it's an absolute blast. Made quite a few years after New Nightmare, this film is a fanservice-filled love letter to classic Freddy fans. One of my favourites.

After this, I believe they went to the reboot. Sorry if my summaries were light on content - as I said, it's been YEARS since I saw one of these films (like, ten years at least, with the exception of Freddy VS Jason, which I saw about six years ago, I think).

I think you should definitely give the oldies a chance. Maybe just watch one or two, and if you like it, dive in to the rest. 😉

Thanks Senshi. The 4th one is called The Dream Master, I think? Everybody has voted for Englund so far on this thread, which doesn't surprise me. I haven't seen him but he was the original Freddy so I can see where people are coming from. But I like Jackie, just to be difficult 😉

Well, I saw the original. It was good, Robert Englund brought something to Freddy for sure and respect to him for being the first one to bring Freddy to life, so to speak. I'll watch the remake again and try to compare them both. I liked Jackie but maybe I could be converted into a Robert girl, we'll see :lol

How is the remake compared to the original? I never saw the remake all the way through. And how is Jackie next to Englund? Also, what do you like more about him? I'm not challenging you, I haven't even seen Jackie in action so I don't know how good he is, but as a longtime Freddy fan, I'm genuinely curious to see how the old films hold up to somebody seeing them years after they were released in light of modern-day effects and a reboot.

Horror flicks are all the same to me (aka one trick ponies that rely completely on fear factor where the bad guy never truly dies and the plot just isn't there) but if you all like them then I respect that view. As for Freddy, I would like to see him to get his "just rewards" (aka be sent permanently to hell or some other place of eternal torment).

At the very least I'd love to see his ass get trashed by an angel or archangel and then have all the souls of the people he's absorbed removed from him and have him sent screaming downward to hell. I guess I'm a sucker for good endings ya know? I totally agree with you Impy (Freddy is indeed a child killing evil sh*t).

Ironically, I kinda thought this topic was about the game Five Nights at Freddy's (which is quite possibly the most TERRIFYING THING I'VE EVER SEEN SOMEONE PLAY) at first.

XD it's nice to see somebody agrees. And I am TOTALLY the same way with bad guys getting their comeuppance. I can stomach a really bad guy as long as he gets at least a sock in the face at the end of it, preferably more. Jinman from Devilman was the best example I can think of for this.

"JINMAAAAN! I'M GONNA MAKE YOU SORRY YOU EXIST! >=O"

A good guy who gets pissed instead of sad/scared is magic to see!

Also Roxxy, you might look up a few scenes from Freddy vs Jason-without spoilering too much there'sa scene that was RIDICULOUSLY satisfying.

I may be changing my mind soon Senshi, I like Robert a lot, but I've only just recently got into horror flicks. Like I said on yahoo to a friend who sent me a clip from Jason X, I haven't got on to Jason yet, I'm still on Freddy. Forgive me, I'm new :lol

I never liked Jason quite as much as Freddy, but he was still pretty good, and there's no denying how iconic he was.

If you like some good dark-humoured horror, you may want to consider trying the Child's Play movies. Chucky (the killer doll) always had a sense of humour, as well. The first film sets him up in a decent origin story, and after that, his humour blooms. My favourite by far was Bride of Chucky, which was brilliantly entertaining if utterly mindless. x3 Chucky and Freddy are two of my favourites. I always found Jason and Michael Myers okay, but a little bland, as they never spoke, so didn't have such vibrant personalities.
