HARD DRIVE WITH TICKLING DAMAGED/SENDING FOR RECOVERY?

Hi all

I was hoping someone with some more technical know-how than me might be able to help with something.

The other day my external hard drive was knocked onto the floor and now doesnt work & I have been told I will need to send it off for data recovery to get everything back onto a new hard drive.

However it has a large amount of my tickling collection (pics/videos) from over the years on it hidden in one main subfolder

If I send it off for recovery will the repair person doing this be able to see all this stuff? I'd rather not have anyone view it for obvious reasons

Would appreciate any help/advice on this before I have to send it away

thanks

I had a similar situation a few years ago. Just go to a repair shop far away from where you live and far away from anyone you know so even if they do see it it won't effect your life in any way.

Yes, they will see it. Unfortunately with hard drives there are not too many options other than making backups.

Source: Spent $700 to have one recovered.

Yeah, I think they're gonna be able to see it. Believe me, this is one of my absolute greatest fears; I would hate to surrender my tech to someone knowing that they were gonna see my tickle stuff. Still, there is one comforting thought: weird though our fetish may be, I guarantee they've seen weirder. This situation crops up all the time--you just know they've seen far kinkier (or just plain grosser) things in their line of work. They'll probably see your tickle stuff and go, "huh, well that's new. Kinda cute. Better than the small-animal-trampling stuff from the other day, that's for sure." And if they're at all professional, they won't mention a word of it when they hand you back your stuff. So don't worry, I doubt you'll be getting ridiculed for your tickle stash. ^^

Who cares, not like you'll run into the person recovering it, anyways. Besides, I'm sure s/he has seen far worse lmao

Well you can always encrypt it like I do: that way unless he's a genius hacker who has no respect for privacy what so ever he can't see what's in there.
With that being said, encrypted hard drives would probably be hard to recover.

They might be able to, yeah. Professionals should not go through your stuff while recovering it though.

Copy your HDD on an external HDD, and buy backup hard discs every few years. Suck to be you. I wouldn't trust any professional, but losing your stash is indeed a huge bummer.

This is an expensive service if having it done professionally. They will see the stuff not because they are nosy, like the guys at the corner computer shop/geek squad at Best Buy, but because when that kind of money is charged they are going to make sure the integrity of the data is restored. With that in mind, these people recover actual important stuff daily, banking info, financial files, important documents, so some fetish content probably rates near the bottom of the their list of anything to blink an eye at. Part of the expensive costs of data recovery (again professional services) is the integrity, privacy and security that comes with doing business with them.

So yea, it may be embarrassing for you while talking to them, but it will more than likely be straightforward and if even mentioned not talked about or carried on about. They're objective is your satisfaction and repeat business.

On another note, what kind of external drive is it? Is it one of these compact all in one units, or can you remove the actual drive from it? Because if you can, you may want to buy a new external enclosure and put the drive in just to make sure it's actually the drive and not the wiring in of the enclosure itself. Just a thought.

I always bring my comp to be fixed by Asians. for some reason I'm more comfortable with them.

I'm no expert, but I imagine it's likely that they will see the stuff - presumably when carrying out the work there will be thumbnails/filenames etc flashing up while the technician is recovering the data - I don't know, but they'd maybe even have to open some file types to ensure the data has been correctly recovered...don't know, but I wish you well.

Whatever happens, hopefully the technician will be professional enough to stay within the bounds of privacy.
To be extra sure maybe try to find an independent/small private repair shop or freelancer, someone who is maybe still building up their business and less likely to jeopardise repeat business by questioning unusual content, rather than going to a big chain store where the staff may have less integrity (and probably less expertise) and would be more likely to have a giggle over it with their colleagues.... that's based on my experience of behaviour witnessed in some big UK stores.

My family have used the same private guy for years now to look after all our laptops, PCs, Internet - there was one horrendous experience I had when he'd taken my laptop away to recover everything after it completely malfunctioned - I sort of knew that he'd see my stuff, but my desire to get it back was greater than my fear at it being discovered...

When he did return the laptop, he did comment about their being a lot of stuff on here, I think the phrase he used was "some pretty strange stuff".... this was in front of my Mother (!!)... and I remember that he did seem baffled as he said this, probably even scratching his head, as if he just didn't know what to think - I remember remarking something along the lines of "oh probably hundreds of steam engine pictures and drunk pictures from Uni" and then swiftly thought of something to ask him that would steer us in a different direction!
I've never felt so self-conscious.... you know that feeling of fear and dread when you suddenly come over all hot?!

Anyway, it was all fine, the stuff was 99% recovered and we still use the same guy now.

On another, but similar note, It's becoming much harder to even hide your tickle stuff within the confines of your own laptop/device now that loads of websites are linked to one-another (google/youtube, flickr/yahoo, facebook and all sorts) and devices are cleverer at remembering your preferences - obviously you can have an elaborate filing system, hidden files, vague filenames, delete browsing history, recent documents etc etc, but I still get caught out sometimes - you can be on some random website filling out an online form and all of a sudden the website will helpfully predict some of the fields for you and one of them will inevitably be tickle related!😀

Yes, I expect they'd see it. Yes, if they're professionals, I don't think it will matter to them. But keep in mind that if they're professionals they're apt to keep a backup of it in case there's a problem with their work.

Thanks for the help everyone, think im gonna have to bite the bullet & send it off for repairs (as the drive itself has all my music & itunes movies on it also) and I will jusy hope that the company I use will be disceet about when they find that particular folder in it

Thanks again
