Here's a rant for ya

Okay, that's fair enough. If we want to leave those courses in as optional, that's okay. It would give students going into fields of studies that include those courses a head start over other students in college, at any rate.

Personally, I think that all knowledge is good knowledge. In a perfect world, we'd be able to stuff kids with as much information on every subject imaginable for free. Unfortunately, that's not the case. We have a very limited amount of time, and a very, very limited budget. We have to decide which skills the average kid is most likely to use, and reinforce those skills the most.

The other countries also have different school schedules than us. I know that Japanese schools have half-days on Saturdays. Over the course of a decade, those half days add up. They also don't have summer vacations for as long as we do.

We should be running the country seems we are able to work through stuff most other government people cant LOL 😉 😛

Yea I agree with everything you have said. :iagree:

Japan from what I have heard has a very high pressure system and the suicide rates to go with it. I think we should make the environment educational but not so strict or intense that everyone has a coronary before they are 15. So I think the schedule we have now is pretty good. Let the kids have two days to have some fun and hey summer vacation is totally gnarly dude. 😛

Since you are giving examples let me give you one. My cousin adores meteorology. Sadly he never learned any math. He knows the bare basics of course but not any algebra or calculus. He found out meteorologists need to know lots of math. By the time he found out it was a bit late to go back. A career he would have loved is now not an option. Education is like a train if you are not there when it comes to the station it will leave you behind. (Kurch)

"like a train." Brilliant commentary.

I think the key difference between us and the government workers is that we're genuinely motivated to improve the welfare of the nation educationally instead of improve the contents of our bank accounts.

And yeah, I agree that Japan is pretty serious about their education. Working kids do death certainly isn't the right way to go.

Well, for starters, our public school system is absolute rubbish.

You can thank years of budget cuts for that.

...My health class that I took for one year taught me more about physical education than my phys ed. class taught me over the period of 8+ consecutive years. The only thing I learned from physical education was that I suck at sports. ...

Phys Ed was always a pet peeve of mine. Geek that I am, I was terrible at sports and hated them with a passion. You know me, the kid who was always picked last for whatever waste of time was on the agenda. What boredom and frustration!

Phys Ed is, so I'm told, a little more civilized these days.
