I'll (try to) help get the thread back on track.

My start date is in the past few months.

Been lurking since before it existed; the board before it; various disjointed efforts by non-aligned individuals (4048's galaxy thing of years gone by). I seem to remember using WebCrawler, Excite, and a couple of other oldies (now in the search engines' hall of fame) to find it.

Myriads, what I think you want to sample is the fact/opinion/belief that your intended audience is indeed ten times bigger than the active participant count; probably bigger than that.

So why do the numbers lie ?

Fear, distrust, suspicion, and the mass media; that's why. ID, tracking, and unfair agglomerative characterizations are what I believe you are trying to discern (as the reasons behind your audience's decision to stay out); i.e., one best not register with the TMF or else one is a (_Fill_In_The_Blank_).

Anyway, lurked for a long time, as you see, and am confident that there are others of similar mindset.

I followed the succession of precursor sites - Psycho's Universe in a couple of incarnations to the early version of this site to the current forum. Don't tell anyone, but I've been scanning tickling sites since before I was 18. Of course back then no one cared because the only "forum" type site was AMT, which I never posted on, and which had much bigger problems than a 17 year old loser lurking.

Good Question....With almost 5000 members, it is surely and interesting one.

One of our handsome moderators (and a long time pal o' mine) had been telling me, "Jo, you should really check out the TMF." I gave him the cyber-nod and said, "Yeah, yeah, one day. I'm sure it's great blah blah blah." 😉

Then last August (I think) I did. I signed up...looked around, and would return here and there to peek in. Then on the eve of a gathering (and being in tickle-mode) I decided to peek once more. I'm not sure what I saw that perked me up and made me stay, but something did it. Likely some witty comment by another member. I love that high brow humor we have going on here. *giggle* Here I am still.

I would likely have found it in a web search as I have a million other places, but instead....I am here by word of mouth. Who says that style of advertising doesn't work?

How did I find TMF? When I first got my own PC I was living in PA and seriously looking for ticklers. I had not met Pete yet and was communicating with loads of male lers. One of them pointed me here.

If I remember correctly, I followed a link from the Magic TOuch web-site. I clicked on it and tried the chat room, then decided I liked the people so much that I stayed. It took me quite a while to de-lurk in the forums, but that happend eventually and then my post total exploded. So Mobnger, there's my answer to your question.

Hi tcrewme, your post isn't in the review forum so I don't think it was deleted. Maybe there was a hiccup in the connection.

I found the TMF in its current form through links on other tickling sites, possibly Josie's. I lurked for a couple of months, then registered so I could post this story.

I lurked tickling sites for a long time from office computers (tip: give the computer guys chocolate and nobody gets busted😉 but I never even signed a guestbook because I was paranoid. By the time I got the home machine, that behavior was pretty ingrained. People tend to take it for granted that so many generous people are out here providing free content. Why waste a keystroke when so much is here just for the taking...

And then there are the people who just plain hate the TMF. *waving at the ones I've chatted with* They hate this place because it's moderated but they come here every day. Bitching and whining about the oppressive atmosphere while downloading every freebie they can find. They'll never sign up but they'll always be here.

Slow & Steady...

I lurked on various Tk sites for quite awhile...saw many of them start well and go "AMT" in a hurry. When the posted content /mission statement of the TMF came out, I decided that perhaps instead of watching so damn much, perhaps I could help influence the evolution of such a promising site...turned out I was no help at all, but somehow the TMF grew up and became an adult, fairly civilized place to go and enjoy and discuss ones fascination with tickling...it took me awhile to fully participate and "trust" the place, I must admit.

T-Crew, a total of 4 posts were deleted by Myriads. He did it because of confusion in the chat room about people thinking he'd changed his handle because of the nickname I gave him. With the problem of the troll using real users names he decided he didn't want someone using his nickname to start spouting obscenities.(No-one can use his regular handle because of his mod status.) He decided he wanted to rub out any mention of it to stop any confusion arising.

I found the TMF through a post Jeff (MTP) made on a tickling newsgroup. I actually used to be quite an active participant in the tickling community, back when I first came online (around 7 years ago), and I used to Moderate a chat room on mIRC called #ticklefun. We eventually had to shut down due to flame wars and take over attempts, but man I sure do miss those days and some of the great folks I used to chat with on a daily basis, much like I do in the TMF chat room now. I have been fortunate in the sense though, that through the TMF I have crossed paths with many of the great friends I had back in #ticklefun. I almost fainted the first day I saw Shem_the_Penman come into the TMF chat room. It was like a high school reunion...only much less repressive...lol. And I am VERY happy to say that my bestest bud and fellow moderator from my mIRC days, FTtickler, is now my fellow moderator again. This time in the TMF chat room 😀

After we closed down #ticklefun, I actually left the tickling community altogether for about 4 years (with the exception of a correspondance I had going with terorizer). I'm so glad that one day last year, back in October, I decided to resurface and join a tickling newsgroup. My life has not been the same since, and I could not be happier in my new home.
