If you now inhabit the United States, but your family migrated from an outside country...

How did your ancestors come across the waters and from where did they come across?

AUSTRIA!!!

 Oh, HAYL, no, Miss Bella, you DIDINT say that..! :roflmao:

As for me...I'm 3 generations off the boat. One half of mother's side came from Greece, one half from Poland, and father's side from Germany.

You guys get that this is a joke about the "how do I come across" threads, right? :headpat:

My father came across by airplane, but it was work-related so he returned back home again! 😀

My folks ran from deeeeeepppppppppp south. according to my uncle, my ancestors was the inspiration for the Boston Marathon,

they ran for 100th of miles well a group of well wishers carrying torches tried to catch up with them. I was told they was trying to light my ancestors way in the dark.

They knew the race was on, because some nice gentlemen would fire the starter pistol in their direction which meant it was time for them to ran.

According to my grandma, we're from so DEEP in the south I have cousins who are still slaves 😱

Grandmother survived Nazi occupied Poland when she was 18. Had an unexploded bomb on her fence for a week

She came to America by boat around 48-49
Grandfather born in America but lived in Poland

Fathers side i sadly have no clue

Really? funny enough my fathers side of the family did too strangely enough.

oh an i am not even commenting on the other post you made... me being from the south. Well I might pm you with it.

Anyways... My fathers family came over as indentured servents because someone in my family couldnt count or something and my great great great grandfather was sold into servetude to recoup the debt or something. So he came over when they did and eventually worked enough to get released from it. Nobody really explained how that happened.

My Mothers side i think they just came over. I still have family in ireland i speak with so it was them just kinda comming over.

Most of my ancestors are Irish. My dad is from there and he flew over on a plane in 1978.

My mom's side is a bunch of different kinds of European, who probably all came over via boat years and years ago.

Then there's a bit of Cherokee in there and well, they were already here of course.

Mine haven't made it so far as the US yet 😛

I guess it depends on how far back in history you want to go. My father traces his ancestry to Sri Lanka until about 600 years ago, when the northern Tamils migrated from India.
My mother is as mixed raced as I am, with Norse, English and Jewish ancestry.

Of course, going back far enough, I trace my ancestry back to Africa, along with everyone else. 😀

Very interesting and informative, R2!!

On my Irish side, my ancestor was this con-artist guy who would con old ladies out of their money. He was eventually found out and as punishment, he was literally thrown out of his own country!
On my Scottish side, I actually come from royalty. A duke. He was paid to leave the country, so as to avoid a possible battle between clans who were jockeying for power. There is a town in Scotland that is named after my family to this day (my mothers maiden name).
Both of them ended up in the then new country of America! Eventually, from all that, my maternal grandfather came to be.

My grandmothers German and French sides came to the states by much more mundane (boring) means. They also came here a looong time ago. I've had ancestors fight in the Civil War and do all sorts of interesting things!

Even thou the thread may have begun for comical reasons, I think my ancestory is commical enough to fit it in here anyway. lol

While I get the joke, I think its an interesting question.

My mom's side is Cajun, whose ancestors are Acadian exiles. They were from Acadia which is now Nova Scotia and the surrounding areas. They were expelled from the area in The Great Expulsion, The Deportation, The Great Upheaval, or Le Grand Dérangement, whichever name you know it by. The biggest population of Cajun people are still in Acadiana, which is an area of of South Central/SW Louisiana made up of 22 parishes(counties), which is my home area before moving to my present location, and the accent I have many of you have asked about.

My Dad's side while are as Cajun as it gets for 4 generations at least. He was turned away from school first day of kindergarten because he only spoke Cajun French. They said go home and learn English, then come back. Which he did extremely quickly. lol But his ancestors beyond that are German.

All four of my grandparents came by boat in the 1910's.

My father's parents were born in Salonika when it was part of the Ottoman Empire but was part of Greece and renamed Thessaloniki by the time they left it (and is still part of Greece).

My mother's parents came from a town usually translated as Kolomeija which was part of the empire of Austria-Hungary when they left it but is now part of Ukraine.

Then there's a bit of Cherokee in there and well, they were already here of course.

Most likely that just means that your very distant ancestors walked across land that is now the Berring Strait during an ice age when the sea level was much lower. Humans did not evolve in North America.

You guys get that this is a joke about the "how do I come across" threads, right? :headpat:

Yes, but why not answer it anyway? 😛

My sig pics tell most of the story.

My fathers side came over from Ireland although i have no idea when or why.

My mother's side came from Norway and are pretty hard to track because they changed their last name 3 times and came to America (Salt Lake City) for the same reason (to escape debt).

According to my grandma, we're from so DEEP in the south I have cousins who are still slaves 😱

According to my uncle; we still have family on the boat waiting to be cleared by customs so they can come ashore. :abducted:

As I understand it, an ancestor of mine named Ludwig got drunk and was swindled into signing papers of indentured servitude when he got on the boat somewhere in the 1760's, I think...

...but we were always doing stupid stuff. Back before any of us came here, over the years the family had amassed a decent fortune, I'm told, in the unlikely industry of tanning. But after some shift in family politics split them down the middle, the fortune for both was exhausted with each side trying to kill the other.

Genius!

Just for fun 😉

I´m actually the very first in my family to have crossed the seas into both the US and Brazil, so far as i know no ancestor did it before 🙂

I´m going to cross it 3rd time tomorrow.

NY, lets see how the big apple is 🙂

So maybe in 3 generations my grandson/daughter will be here stating:
"my ancestor crossed the seas by plane, 1st time on the US to attend those early big gatherings called NEST"

Who knows....

My dad's side is super Irish. My mom's is English, German (PA Dutch)...and a little bit of American Indian. (My great great grandmother was an Indian princess 😀)

Lets see...

Ok, some followed their herd of sheep from Scotland to Nova Scotia. Their descendants slowly moved south and became hillbillies. Some came on ships to escape famine and violence, and their descendants became hillbillies. Some left Germany during WW1 to escape conscription. They moved to Texas and their descendants became rednecks. My mom comes from rednecks, my dad from hillbillies, and they both had the good taste and common courtesy to not let me grow up to be either. So I'm a New Mexican. I sweat green chile, I set of pico-counters, and I hate the commercialization of Southwest Culture. The End.

Also on a more informative note:

On my mother side i come from a family whose roots are unsure. No one can be certain if they were originally converted jews who were forced to change names after the reconquista. Other view sees this family as being truly original from the area which is today Portugal. From what i´ve read, i believe the 1st option will be far more correct. The several family branches usually give people of artistic skills, traders and even politicians.

On my father side my family is one of the mostly widespread in Portugal and also one of the oldest known. Due to it´s long long existence the family has split into so many branches that today you find members pretty much everywhere. Family origins are Northern Portugal, from ancient celt tribes, the ones who outfought the romans and latter became the core of the portuguese kingdom. This family is today spread even out of Portugal. During monarchy they are not known to have reached high nobility, altough some branches were noble. Our current President is from this family which usually gives hardworkers/fighters and sometimes leaders.

Well....I'm Romanian, Russian, and Polish. My family came over here between 1890 and 1910 to escape oppression in Europe. Pretty straightforward.
