James Bond

All the Pierce Brosnan episodes really got me excited with Bond films. The rest are just... James Bond.

But... But... James Bond is a good thing, right? James Bond means awesome. The way you say it sounds like James Bond's not enough to catch your interest :scream:
 
I just finished 007 Everything or Nothing.

I get it's a game and not a film so I shouldn't expect as much emphasis on story as from the film series but I felt the ending was somewhat anti-climactic.
 
What an excellent thread to dredge up. There are a bunch of really bad movies in the series (looking at you A View To A Kill, Die Another Day, Spectre, Live and Let Die, Moonraker) … but some equally excellent ones (we see you Goldfinger, From Russia With Love, The Spy Who Loved Me, Goldeneye and EVEN the oft maligned On Her Majesty's Secret Service). Even shitty ones like Man With The Golden Gun can be salvaged by dynamite performances by professional actors like Christopher Lee. The best? Subjectivity reigns supreme, but Casino Royale probably best captures Ian Fleming's tone in the books. It's a damn good movie. Leading to the next two questions:

1) Has anyone read any of the books, and if so, what are your thoughts? (I find many of them to be completely worthwhile)

2) Best Bond Villain?

Blood Stone had the same problem. But in both cases, the direction and gameplay are excellent~ And very true to the spirit of the franchise. You can feel the people who made these games are fans themselves.
 
I would like to experience Bloodstone even if the lack of gadgets would irk me but I don't own a PS3.

Also available on PC (but somewhat hard to find, and it is not on Steam :sadcry:) and XboX360. The latter is the version I played.

I would like to get my hands on the remake of Goldeneye; I hate that they replaced Brosnan by Craig :sowrong: but from the videos I managed to catch on Youtube it seems a worthwhile entry as far as Bond and shooters are concerned, especially considering I really liked the N64 version back when I was a kid.

It didn't catch my interest so much, just like Star Wars (OMG! What an outrage!!!), lol. Pierce Brosnan's James Bonds are super awesome though. 😀

Just kidding 😀 I like do like Star Wars, though... that's why I enjoyed none of them after Episode VI 😉
 
I liked Live & Let Die.
Granted it had its questionable aspects like blaxploitation aspect and the worst villain death in the series via balloon Kananga.
Also the downright icky part where Bond uses a stacked deck of cards to trick Solitaire into sleeping with him.

Yeah that death scene is cringy af. Probably the stupidest death in the entire series (tied with Dr No?). Too bad, especially given that Yaphet Kotto played a very charismatic and believable villain, one of the few realistic ones.

I absolutely adore the funeral scene at the beginning (in New Orleans I believe?), and the heart-pumping boat chase which I would put on par with the one in Indiana Jones.

I don't get what you mean, though: what's wrong with Blaxploitation? Those films are an essential part of American pop-culture. I am a big fan of Shaft and all the Pam Grier movies, for instance. And it gave this Bond entry a very strong exotic flavour, along with a fantastic atmosphere. Baron Samedi felt a bit underused, but Tee-Hee was a great henchman, I think.

Maybe it's just me ^_^ I just found a bit anticlimatic and a bit ridiculous the way he gets lowered and can't climb back up because his artificial hands were too slippery 🙄 Compared to most awesome deaths we are generally gratified with, it struck me as rather odd.

My favourite death scene is possibly Franz Sanchez' because of what's at stake. Also, he did not really know who James Bond was until the very last seconds before his demise:

Sanchez: "You could have had everything."

Bond: "Don't you want to know why?"

Really awesome 😎
 
I think of the two games I've played the best villain death in them was in Nightfire when Kiko can't get to the safe room in time before the rocket takes off.

Ah, I never played Nightfire. The games that preceded Everything or Nothing tried hard to emulate Goldeneye's success but seemed to miss the mark somehow. At least that's what it looked to me back then. Did you enjoy it?
 
I wasn't into first person shooters (only bought it because Bond) but I really liked it overall.
Even simple stuff like the Bond theme playing in levels was awesome and made it feel like you *were* Bond.
 
I think cover-based action with a slight focus on melee and a touch of stealth like Bloodstone got it right. It literally mimics the films, because that is exactly how Bond fights in them. FPS gameplay is not completely suitable for Bond games, IMO, because it emphasizes aggression a bit too much. The gunplay looks more like Doom (run around strafing) rather than moving from cover to cover and picking off targets like in the films.

That does not make them inferior shooters by any stretch, though. Goldeneye was a masterpiece, and I am sure that Nightfire was good. But I'll take the gameplay of Everything or Nothing and especially Bloodstone over them any day :typerhappy:
 
Even in Everything or Nothing I was still pretty bad at the hand to hand fighting.
 
Though I will say Blood Stone has the best title song I'd heard in a Bond game.
Everything or Nothing by Mya was OK (too slow for my liking) but I wouldn't go as far as Calvin Dyson did when he called it a betternsong than Goldfinger.
 
As far as fictional characters go, I think James Bond has a great legacy. I have enjoyed just about every Bond film I have ever seen. Personally, I think Daniel Craig and Sean Connery were fantastic and of course, dashingly handsome :bubbleheart:
