Keeping up with the World Cup

Hey- we're not going to embarrass ourselves this time!

And I say this armed with the knowledge that we just beat Portugal! As that most un-American of Americans, soccer was the only sport I played in school and I actually do follow the World Cup. Don't talk about '98 (or any history with regard to the U.S. team, for that matter)- I think we've got a more agressive, focused, and lively team (as opposed to dead) this time around. In the past, it was looked upon as an accomplishment when the Americans simply made it out of group play. I think we may surprise a lot of people, but I just want to see some good games. That's all you could ever hope for if you were pulling for the U.S., right? At this point, I'm hoping that I have the stomach to head out to some all-hours joints for these games. They're all starting between 2:30 and 7:30 in the A.M. here !

I'll be pulling for you Brits this Friday, but that's going to be a pretty tough game.

You gotta remember, I'm learning as I go here. BUT- I can tell you that Portugal was ranked #5 and we were DEFINATELY the underdog going into the game! That we beat them is a feather in our cap..so to speak!

USA v/s Sth Korea....ARGHH

I SWEAR S.K. only scored in minute 78 becuase I thought to myself, "Wow, I'm watching a whole game and we're going to win." Then the ball just nearly 'bounces' off the guy's shoulder and into the goal. BLERG! 😛

I kinda think South Korea should have won. The US keeper was good but South Korea had lots more shots on goal and they also had that butchered penalty.

I heard that interesting fact from the two Australian commentators on SBS before the game. One of them said how the US isn't traditionally a 'soccer' country, when the other pointed out that the US has more players than we have men women and children. He also said that this is the first US team that isn't made up entirely of the husbands of American citizens.
