Listened to this one recently too! I'm a drummer, and another drummer friend of mine listened to this album to judge who was the funkiest drummer on the album. Every song has a different drummer, and they're all amazing: Steve Gadd, Pretty Purdie (who plays on two songs), Jim Keltner, Rick Marotta ,etc etc..... So we listened to see of all of these groove-masters, who had the deepest groove.
Hands down, Pretty Purdie. We split though, on which song: I said "Deacon Blues" was the greatest, subtlest performance on the album, he went with "Home At Last".
Anyways love this thread!
Last night I put on "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida",as I've done probably once a year since I was 4 years old, trying to see if I still don't like any of the songs on Side 1!
(the first track is ok).
I love that "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" was recorded on Long Island, lol. I always think I'm going to scoff at the drum solo but it's so melodic.... in a way it's one of the best drum solos ever! It's definitely one of the only ones you can "sing"! "Dooga-dooga doot doot........doot doot!"
