Movies that should never be/should never have been remade

Sometimes movies are remade and occasionally even surpass the original(like Cape Fear, IMHO. I prefer Deniro's tatooed Bible-thumping psycho over the original's Robert Mitchum). But more often than not some Hollywood studio or hotshot Director decides to remake a fantastic film, and the new version is pure crap.
Here is a list of movies that I feel should never be remade into some high budget special effects snoozefest(and unfortunately some already were)

1) Jaws. No need to improve upon perfection. Seriously who today could even touch Robert Shaw's Capt. Quint? Maybe DeNiro, or a younger Anthony Hopkins, but even that might be a stretch

2) Blade Runner. Even thirty years later, it's a masterpiece(IMHO)

3) Robocop - Should never have been remade. The first one was just the right amount of violence and action, mixed w/a little bit of satire. Plus how could you top Clarence Boddicker as a gum chewing sociopath? I refuse to watch the remake(heard it sucked).

4) Walking Tall. OK, some of the TMF crew might be a little young to remember the original, but damn it was intense, and much more accurate(it was based on a true story). And nothing against the Rock, who starred in the remake, but it's easier to cheer for a chubby everyman like Joe Don Baker(the original Buford Pusser) than a chiseled Pretty Boy like Dwayne Johnson.

5) The Longest Yard. Again another film from the early 70'(I know I'm showing my age), and although I wouldn't call the original a great film, compared to that unforgivable piece of crap Adam Sandler remake, the 70's version looked like "Gone with the Wind"

6) The Pink Panther Movies. Peter Sellers created one of the funniest characters in Cinema history, only to have it destroyed by Steve Martin. Seriously I don't "get" Steve Martin. I never thought he was funny nor a particularly good actor, and having an overrated comedian trying to recapture the magic of Inspector Clouseau is like having the Three Stooges repaint the Sistine Chapel. Even Alan Arkin(who briefly starred as Clouseau in the 60's) was much better than Martin.

7) Fargo. Can't recreate that magic. Ohh Yahhh!

I don't know. It seems to me, you can't really say that a remake of something good must necessarily be worse. If directors feel that can add something to the original movie be it special effects or better storytelling elements, then by all means they can try. Nothing is perfect and all movies can somehow be improved or at least something different not necessarily worse can be made out of them.

I'm not that interested in movies though to remember any remake in particular. I'm sure there are lots of crappy remakes, just as there are lots of good ones.

Get Carter- The original is a stone-cold classic and a masterpiece of British cinema. The remake? Absolute doggerel.

Superman Returns & Man of Steel- Please, just stop. Christopher Reeve's legacy deserves to be preserved, not dismantled with these two pieces of pseudo-macho nonsense.

The Searchers- True Grit was bad enough, but if anyone EVER remakes John Wayne's finest film, it will be an absolute outrage.

I agree, Steve Martin erroneously believes he is some kind of comic genius... and nothing could be farther from the truth. He is a hack and has always been. Sad what he did to that fine franchise. Even Roberto Benigni was better by light years.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971) / Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)

Willy Wonka may be the best choice of all. The original is classic and should never have been remade.

I dont think it ever got off the ground but i read a rumor some years ago about a possible Godfather remake. Absoutely not!

Ugh...I was going to say "The Godfather". No way, no how.

Another vote from me for the Willy Wonka remake, whoever greenlighted that project was most likely pranking all moviegoers with that one lol

Two actors that instantly ruin any film - Sly Stallone, and Keanu Reeves

Please, where would we be without the the critically acclaimed masterpiece of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure"?

I agree about The Searchers, The Godfather and the Pink Panther films. Leave them alone!!!

I await with dread a remake of Gone With The Wind, which is no doubt in the works. The thought of what today's Hollyweird might do to this timeless classic fills me with fear and trembling. :disgust:

Or Stallone's "Stop, or my Mom will Shoot!"

I see a lot of Mob/mafia movies like Goodfellas, and the Godfather, on this thread. I know I'm in the minority here, but Mob movies kind of bore me(even though I love Deniro). I thought Goodfellas was overrated(not a Ray Liotta fan), and I'm probably the only guy in America who's never seen any of the Godfather movies all the way though.
I did love Casino, but I don't think that was your typical Mafia film.

BTW I do think some great movies from the past could possibly be remade successfully.
For example I loved the Excorcist, but I believe a skilled director today could do a quality updated version of the Excorcist, using the right kind of effects, dialogue and the right actors/actresses.

Some comedies might be able to be remade today as well. Maybe the Odd Couple? Or Animal House?

I am a huge Star Wars fan. If they tried to remake the original films I would boycott them.

I don't know. When it comes to remakes, I think that can work, but they have to be done right, as well as have a certain shelf life to them.

For example, who here has seen a movie by the name "Scarface" staring Al Pacino? This was a remake of a movie from the 1930's. It was a huge hit. The core story was the same, but they expanded on it, and made it fit the times. I think, and it takes a great director and great actors to do this, that older movies can be remade. That being said, remaking movies that are 30 years or less old just seems lazy.
