On the contrary, the new trilogy was something brand new and different. We got to really understand the other three movies better, because we knew how Darth Vader became Darth Vader. I think the prequels made us feel a bit sorry for his character because of the fact he was blinded by love which led to his utter destruction.
You had a new cast, with great actors like McGregor, Christensen, Portman, Jackson, Lee, and McDiramid. I just don't see why everyone knocked the prequels so bad. I mean, guys like me weren't around from 1977-83, and didn't get to go see the movies on the big screen. I missed out on the "Star Wars is cool era" and by the time it got it's groove back I was too old to play with the toys.
The new trilogy was a great thing for us fans that only got to rent the movies growing up. We got to read all the new articles, go to the late night premeries, and even play the video games.
C'mon man, we got to see Jedi in their heyday, Yoda kick some a$$, and some spectacular effects that the original never had.
I suppose everyone who hates them has their own reasons, but mine personally is the cheesy dialouge and the poor acting.
Portman, Mcgregor, Lee, and many others are all fine actors, but in these movies their preformances are horrible. I blame this on George Lucas's inability to direct. Now, you may say that because he made the original trilogy and it was so popular that he is a great director, but look carefully:
The only movies he directed were A new Hope, and the prequels. You can notice that the acting in all of those movies feels awkward and rushed. Lucas seems to have no idea with how acting works.
Unless I see a movie that proves otherwise, I will never ever EVER accept Hayden Christensen as a good actor. His whiney, squeaky voice and effeminate appearence is completly inappropriate for portraying one of the greatest villians of all time.
As for the special effects... well... what can I say? they were overdone. The original trilogy used models for special effects. These models were detailed beyond belief, enabling the viewers to see and imagine exactly how everything worked. Ships and other things looked dirty, worn and used, giving them a more realistic feel. In the new trilogy, everything was shiny and smooth. pretty much everything just looked like a mirror. Special effects were hideously overdone. It seemed as though he wend specialFX crazy and just used CGI wherever it was possible, even if it wasnt nessicary. Making yoda a CGI took away from the realistic, believeable feel that he originally had. Even though he was a puppet. Personally, I would choose the old hand-made models over the new CGI effects anyday.
A final point, Lucas seemed to feel the need to add an excessive amount of humor to the movie. Not that there's anything wrong with that, as anyone can appreciate the antics of C3P0 and R2-D2, but he overdid these as well, often adding cute little robots doing funny tasks at inappropriate times, such as during the climax fight of episode 3. I felt like screaming "Why would you put that in now!?" frequently as I watched that movie. A climax that people have been waiting almost 30 years for, interuppted by a stupid flying robot making funny squeaking and beeping noises.
George Lucas came up with a great idea, but it wasnt something he shoul'dve done by himself. "Empire Strikes Back" is one of my all time favorite movies, and he didnt even direct it. In conclusion, Lucas is a skilled editor and storyteller. But when it comes to writing dialouge and directing actors, he shows a significant lack of skill.
Out of fear of changing the thread's subject, I will say no more on the topic here. If anyone wishes to continue the discussion, feel free to PM me or something. Just no immature crap, please.
