Movies that shouldn't be remade...

isabeau said:
i was watching the movie..."The day the earth stood still" the other day, and i was thinking...i'm glad they never remade that movie.

Actually, it was remade eight years later in 1959 as "The Cosmic Man" starring John Carradine 😱

it was????? hmm i never heard of that movie...

and General Zod...once again i say..how do you know Superman is not amongst us???? hehe.

ive heard rumors of a big budget remake of the steve mcqueen classic "bullitt" , in my opinion tampering with that film would be blasphemous :couch:

Star Wars! If star wars was remade I would cry and I'm pretty sure there would be people dead when I was through. Star wars should stay just the way it is.

My vote would be for the timeless classic "Not All Blondes Are Dumb." Like they say on the beer commercial, it doesn`t get any better than this.

hmmm.....you seem to speak with some knowledge of this classic. Perhaps you could have made a cameo appearance. 😎 As one of the smart blondes, of course.

Not sure if I agree about Casablanca not being remade. I mean yes it's a classic and you don't mess with the classics, but I'd like to see what today's actors and actresses would do with it. Follow me on this: Imagine James Kaviezel or Collin Farrell with someone like Kate Hudson or Reese Witherspoon. Studious would make millions. Just my opinion.

I probably speak for alot of men here, but if there's a god Hollywood won't ever try to remake ANY of John Wayne's movies. NO ONE would ever be able to pull that off, and there would be a rash of theater fires at least in America IMHO.

Star Wars shouldve stayed as it was. The new trilogy was horrible.

John Carradine!? NO!!!!!

It's like that man was always 100 years old...

On the contrary, the new trilogy was something brand new and different. We got to really understand the other three movies better, because we knew how Darth Vader became Darth Vader. I think the prequels made us feel a bit sorry for his character because of the fact he was blinded by love which led to his utter destruction.

You had a new cast, with great actors like McGregor, Christensen, Portman, Jackson, Lee, and McDiramid. I just don't see why everyone knocked the prequels so bad. I mean, guys like me weren't around from 1977-83, and didn't get to go see the movies on the big screen. I missed out on the "Star Wars is cool era" and by the time it got it's groove back I was too old to play with the toys.

The new trilogy was a great thing for us fans that only got to rent the movies growing up. We got to read all the new articles, go to the late night premeries, and even play the video games.

C'mon man, we got to see Jedi in their heyday, Yoda kick some a$$, and some spectacular effects that the original never had.

Agreed. Along with you and Izzy they just couldn't make them better than the originals. I agree with Mils about King Kong too. I was hoping more from Peter Jackson after the Rings trilogy but was sadly disappointed. Jack Black stunk up that remake. and they did remake The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari around 1947 although I've only seen it advertised in oldies.com. I think Glyness Johns played the female lead.

I think I love you! *wipes tear* It's just beautiful, the way you put that.

LONG LIVE STAR WARS! :bouncybou

Your point, Willy Nilly, would actually be that there will never be another John Wayne. There's a lot of truth in that. How could there be?

However, in the right hands, an updating of 'The Searchers' might be unforgettable. Move the setting to modern day Baghdad, and have the young girl kidnapped by terrorists. The right director could make a masterpiece of this.

My beef is when they make remakes of movies that made you roll your eyes at the ceiling to begin with. Like 'The Poseidon Adventure'
😱 :idontwann

Dawn of the dead.

They made a remake a couple of years ago now but it just can't beat the crappy '70s special effects and the ketchup; that was just sheer brilliance that fits zombie horror like nothing else

I suppose everyone who hates them has their own reasons, but mine personally is the cheesy dialouge and the poor acting.

Portman, Mcgregor, Lee, and many others are all fine actors, but in these movies their preformances are horrible. I blame this on George Lucas's inability to direct. Now, you may say that because he made the original trilogy and it was so popular that he is a great director, but look carefully:
The only movies he directed were A new Hope, and the prequels. You can notice that the acting in all of those movies feels awkward and rushed. Lucas seems to have no idea with how acting works.

Unless I see a movie that proves otherwise, I will never ever EVER accept Hayden Christensen as a good actor. His whiney, squeaky voice and effeminate appearence is completly inappropriate for portraying one of the greatest villians of all time.

As for the special effects... well... what can I say? they were overdone. The original trilogy used models for special effects. These models were detailed beyond belief, enabling the viewers to see and imagine exactly how everything worked. Ships and other things looked dirty, worn and used, giving them a more realistic feel. In the new trilogy, everything was shiny and smooth. pretty much everything just looked like a mirror. Special effects were hideously overdone. It seemed as though he wend specialFX crazy and just used CGI wherever it was possible, even if it wasnt nessicary. Making yoda a CGI took away from the realistic, believeable feel that he originally had. Even though he was a puppet. Personally, I would choose the old hand-made models over the new CGI effects anyday.

A final point, Lucas seemed to feel the need to add an excessive amount of humor to the movie. Not that there's anything wrong with that, as anyone can appreciate the antics of C3P0 and R2-D2, but he overdid these as well, often adding cute little robots doing funny tasks at inappropriate times, such as during the climax fight of episode 3. I felt like screaming "Why would you put that in now!?" frequently as I watched that movie. A climax that people have been waiting almost 30 years for, interuppted by a stupid flying robot making funny squeaking and beeping noises.

George Lucas came up with a great idea, but it wasnt something he shoul'dve done by himself. "Empire Strikes Back" is one of my all time favorite movies, and he didnt even direct it. In conclusion, Lucas is a skilled editor and storyteller. But when it comes to writing dialouge and directing actors, he shows a significant lack of skill.

Out of fear of changing the thread's subject, I will say no more on the topic here. If anyone wishes to continue the discussion, feel free to PM me or something. Just no immature crap, please. 😀

I hear they are making a remake of the movie "Network". I can't even CONCEIVE of that.

I can't imagine a remake of 2001: A Space Oddesy or A Clockwork Orange. Or Citizen Kane.

A few years back, they remade 'Psycho'. A frame for frame re-do, in color, and I don't even remember who was in it. What the hell was the point? Did they remake it frame for frame for fear of being criticized for trying to reinterpret Hitchcock? 🙄

Anyone who would even attempt to remake 'Citizen Kane' should have his head examined. Or 'Clockwork Orange'. Bad enough taking a shot at Orson Welles, but with Stanley Kubrick, your remake might come out to be one of the great unintentional comedies.

I remember that remake of Psycho...Ann Hecht i think her name was..they used the same music and everything..but i can't remember who played Norman Bates...

Isabeau, yeah, totally, there's another one. PSYCHO. How could they remake Psycho??

How could they remake the Pink Panther???

How could they make a movie of THE HONEYMOONERS???

Since Hollywood....indeed the ENTIRE entertainment business....went corporate and taken over by basically lawyers and accountants, things have sucked all around, in music and movies especially.

I heard it was not bad, but I didn't think a remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was all that necessary either, much as I like Johnny Depp as an actor.

hey hi nontkl yes i basically agree with all you just said...

although the remake of "Birds of Paradise" with Louis Jordan and Debra Paget was far better than the original..

My vote goes to Das Boot. I don't think anyone could pull off a good re-make of that movie on account of it being heavy on dialogue, setting, plot, and thought provoking scenes.

There is abso-fucking-lutely NO way in hell a movie studio could get away with that thanks to the ADHD-addled generation X crowd.

If someone was stupid enough to try, I'd assume that the new format would involve black trenchcoats, vampires, wraparound sunglasses, six dozen tacked on sex scenes with female ship mates that shouldn't have existed in the first place(but the studio will swear up and down that they did it to display strong female leads, regardless of the fact that they spend nintey percent of the movie on their backs), a techno-hip-hop soundtrack and the usual proto-typical acerbic dialogue about things in life being shades of grey.
