Why does this not happen anymore?
“All good things must come to an end,” and as is true of all good things, chivalry is dying. Chivalry is dying because civility is dying. I direct your attention to the threads in and about this board for fine examples of the soon deceased. Here we are, all of a like-kind mind on a given thing – namely, tickling – and we are, generally speaking, incapable of treating each other with the respect due as human beings. This is not to say we should all gather ‘round the campfire and heartily sing “Kumbya;” when was that really necessary to treat each other properly?
Gone are the days when folk could differ in opinion and still be a community; now are the days where one’s opinion is not valid unless all others are forced to opine in the one’s likeness.
Gone are the days when folk could discuss matters maturely and intellectually; now are the days of vehement Slothful Induction and venom-soaked Abusive Ad Hominem.
Fleeting are the days where male chivalry was but one side of the chivalry-coin (for remember, back when men were expected to act a certain way towards each other *and* women, so too, were women expected to act in their own chivalrous manner); now are the days of selfishness, intolerance, and brutality.
I am of a mind to preserve and persevere in the chivalrous code, irrespective of the knowledge that I will die a death of silent obsolescence and disappear into the potter’s ground. And I will die a satisfied death.
