on "Tickle Torture"

Iggy pop said:

Actually I do not think this happens very often. I've been around numerous sororities and sority girls and I have never seen or heard of one case of this happening. I have seen sorority girls tickle each other, but it is usually a very quick tickle with nobody being pinned down and tickled for five minutes.

Well I actually own a video of a sorority initiation that lasted a total of about half an hour. All three girls getting initiated were locked in stocks and they weren't just tickled, they had itching powder all over their feet, feathers (pointed end and soft bits) and their feet were beaten with a wooden ruler and what looked like a steel saucepan handle.

It was quite probably the most blood thinning video I ever bought! It does have to be said however that all three girls were laughing and joking about the ordeal a few minutes afterwards. The only TRULY horrifying thing was the 1980's hairstlyes. :blaugh:

On the use of the word "torture"

It seems to me, it all stems from the paradox that tickling is.

First off, tickling, as practiced by some community members, involves the same kind of bondage equipment and some of the same lingo as the more hard-core S&M. So let's consider S&M for a moment. Consider whipping (which no, I'm not into at all). In consensual S&M relationships, the sub chooses to be tied down and whipped. Is it torture? Of course it is. Does the tortured party like it? Again, of course, hence the word for which the letter M in S&M stands.

Now, turning to tickling. Obviously, it's very different from whipping, but even for a consenting ticklee, the natural impulse while being tickled is to try to get away from it, hence the bondage equipment. There was a thread about bondage some weeks back, by the way, in which numerous ticklees described their favorite positions of being held down in order to be tickled. So, it has elements of torture, but it's torture for pleasure, and much less adverse than something like whipping.

So, I wouldn't get too bothered by the word, though of course one thing that stands out about this community in general is that different people experience the phenomenon in different ways, and feel comfortable with different sets of vocabulary to describe it. As long as we keep what we do safe and consensual, I think we can live with the variances over terminology.

I sometimes think that both parties get a kick from describing tickling as 'torture' Any thought from anyone on that?

true, true. good point on "it may be torture, but if they like that, it's okay". thing is, though, my stance has always been, "if they like it, it's not torture". disagreements over the meaning of the word are, I guess, at the heart of this issue. shame it can probably never be "resolved".

if someone likes being whipped, it may hurt, but is it torture? my inclination is to say no. torture isn't something anyone *wants* to experience.

oh well. thanks for the thoughts, everyone. 🙂
