Sorry I haven't replied or gotten involved in this discussion lately, work has been...well...work. Hectic as usual.
Sure did have a good chuckle at some of the reviews that you guys have given to many of the past video-game movies! (You guys sure know how to hit the nail on the head for each one!) Maybe I should have started a video-game-movie discussion thread instead... heh
Anyway I can't say I'm a huge fan of the Wing Commander series, although that seems to have helped me somewhat when I watched the actual movie. Ignorance was bliss I guess. But this Evangelion title that you mention Dracula; it sure does sound interesting. As it is most of my friends are into the Anime/Manga craze, so they sort of have me hooked on a few series. Started with the movie "Princes Monanoke" (spelling that right?) and then went on to Naruto (not sure about that spelling either!)
But I definetely agree, simply having Peter Jackson as producer by no means ensures the Halo-Movie's success. But it sure does make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside all the same! 😀
You should definitely give Evangelion a try. I own the series dvd collection box set and the movies, and I'm really looking forward to the live-action movie.
Unlike alot of people though, when I heard that he'd be directing it, or was going to direct it, I had mixed feelings. I still say Mr. Ano, the creator, should direct it. He's the best possible choice, and he can utlimately ensure that his characters and story are represented as they are, not as how Jackson or anyone else decides to interprete them to suit a fade, or whatever.
The character Rei Ayanami could easily be turned into a goth-type character even though she's nothing like that. I worry especially how they're going to handle Asuka Langley and Commander Gendo Ikari. These two have to be down right for them to have any credibility.
There are so many more nuances and layers to Evangelion, an anime, than there were to Lord of the Rings, a movie, IMHO. So its a pretty big thing.
As for the anime itself, be patient with it, thats my advice. At first it may bore you because nothing big seems to be happening. Everyone I recommend the series to I say that in order to fully understand and appriciate the series, you have to open yourself up to it and be willing to take the time to learn it and evaluate it before you can truely get the most out of it.
At first glance it appears to be nothing more than a giant robot show, but theres so much more to it. Ano actually got death threats when he wasn't going to create a movie to finish the series, and by popular demand he did do it which made the tv series ending an alternate ending.
You'll almost definitely have to watch the series through twice or more in order to understand some things and be able to read between the lines, and even then you'll probably still have questions. If you're not into theology at all though, it may not mean as much to you, since a great portion of the hidden and apparent nuances and themes are religious and theological in nature. And if you don't understand them to begin with (being they're not going to explain anything) then it all may just go over your head.
If all else fails, it's still one of the better animes out there and its still enjoyable at face value, if nothing more.
