Insult me all you want. You travel down to Ecuador, Costa Rica, Haiti, Venezuela and other places where they are making positive impacts on the lives around them and TELL THEM TO THEIR FACES THEY ARE PISSING ON THE CULTURE AROUND THEM! Tell that to the local governments that seek their help. Tell that to the 15 year old girl in Ecuador that would be sold to be abused in some brothel that now has training to get a real job to earn money without selling her body.
This is a complicated issue. But I'm from Costa Rica and I have to say you appear to have a very warped vision of my country... And I think it's funny you mention the 15 year old girl case; because a few years back Costa Rica started to be advertised as a paradise for sexual predators as far as child prostitution and prostitution in general(and yes, your example was about Ecuador, but since you are throwing us all in the same lot up there then it is transferable, aside from the fact that my example shows the selective nature of your post), this of course caused a surge of people to come down in search of this paradise, and then, let's see, what happened? Oh yes, a bunch of people in jail an extradited... You can't tell me prostitution here is worse than in the US, it is not, you can't tell me child prostitution and child pornography rings don't exist in the US, so why use us as an example for... ANYTHING!
(as a fun fact, a local outrage came to pass when that sexual paradise belief made it's way into Cameron Diaz' film, "The Sweetest Thing", and a wide campaign was thrown to make tourists understand it was not the case, huge billboards with pictures of arrested people, nice scenery...)
To me it sounds like these missionaries are only trying to make themselves feel better by coming all the way here to do things they could be doing at home.
And I have met quite a few people who come here to work on various projects, plenty in a place called Monteverde, and those very much liked our "guaro" way more than they enjoyed their "charity" work, which was done as I already mentioned in Monteverde, which is a highly priced touristic site with PLENTY of multimillion dollar homes and hotels, nice site to pick... Also I met another few who were here for ophthalmology work, this ones I met because I also volunteered on their project, not on the ophthalmology part mind you, but for translation purposes, and they also enjoyed the "guaro" very much, but did a good job overall, these latter ones were not of religious foundation btw.
Either way, be it religious or not, this "missionaries" or "charity workers" more often than not do it for the trip more so than for the actual help.
I'm sorry, but I found your comment offensive and felt compelled to reply.
Wow indeed. I took time out of my evening to write my post, and it is unabashedly unwelcome. Go ahead and close the thread, your disheartening response has eliminated any will I have to bother with it anymore. Of course, be sure to wait until The Hawk has a chance to shamelessly proselytize before you do, so that it makes him appear as if he actually had a point worth considering. :lol
Feel free to sweep my legs out from beneath me even further by deleting - or even rewriting my posts! I've already taken the liberty to screenshot -everything- for my personal amusement. At least I know I was right, if nobody else.
That's not true, there are some of us that also know you are right.
I still don't know why the 2nd law of thermodynamics is used by people who want to deny evolution, for some reason they seem to think we are in some kind of closed environment, and that god is Maxwell's demon...
Of course as you already pointed out they always leave the sun out of the equation, because it basically messes up their argument. I don't think I can add anything better than what you already did, I'm not an astrophysicist
😛 so I won't get into that too much
But I do enjoy it very much and read and watch as much as I can from Sagan and watch Neil deGrasse's series and conferences, perhaps you can recommend something for me
😀
One more thing, just so you know, an female astrophysicist in a tickling forum.. :wub
