I do actually find them at the same (intolerable) level of tastelessness. Another example: Somebody dressing up as an SS officer as a joke. I would not find that funny, regardless of context or intent, I would find it highly offensive. Some things are not funny to me, even if they were intended as humorous or satirical.

I have no problem with the courts affirming people's right to burn or deface the flag as free speech. If I were a judge, I would do the same. But free speech does not make you immune from criticism or bad opinions of you, based on what you said.

I didn't realize that he was gone for a while, because I put him on my 'Ignore' list. He is the only member that I ever had on that list.

Did you put him on that list purely because of his choice of sig gif? Mil, I seriously doubt if he expected anyone to react like that. Even to a most Americans it comes across as a harmless, if spiked, joke. I had similar pics in my sig for a while and asked quite a few about them. I never received such a strong level of disgust from any of them. Was the gif the only reason you iggied him?

Point of clarification....Biggles and I pm'ed a few times before he left and it did not reflect directly on someone being miffed at his sig, but because he was trashed by several members no matter what he posted... He grew tired of his points being missed and I feel he will be back after a break which many of us need.

(and sorry mate as I have to agree with Joby and others that there really was no reason to dig this old dog up so to speak..don't see it as serving any useful purpose....my opinion of course..)

That was true about him. I think people didn't appreciate how subtle his points could be. I PM with him quite a bit too. Usually when I post about an article in an Australian publication, it's been because of a tip-off from him.

Joby, I've e-mailed and TMF PM'ed you. The e-mail has all the bold and italics brackets in it that the TMF PM does, so it might make more sense if you read the TMF PM. There'll be no weird punctuation marks lying around then.

your suposition that we are one world/people, that the bottom of the pyramid has the power, etc.

problem is in your example about the iraq vs iran war. they didn't turn around and say "get stuffed!". they said ok, where are those (insert religious sect here) bastards!

se they are still fighting over religion! how F'ing moronic can you get?!?! no thanks, i don't want to be part of a whole that includes people like them! just as the ira and their suporters don't want to be part of a whole that would include england. until you can do away with these horrible realities, it's all just pissing into the wind.

I agree, the IRA and their like on the prot side are just like that. Until people start seeing "England" and "Ireland" etc as nothing more than a geographical location, it will continue that way. That's the lesson the world needs to learn if war is going to stop.

Okay mods, lock away if that's the policy in this one. Turn it over and baste it, it's done.

Yes, that was the only reason. I didn't want to see that signature picture again.

I will admit to having stronger, more visceral reactions to desecration of the flag than do most Americans. It gives me immediate rage and churning of stomach acid.

I don't want to go into the exact reasons, but it has to do with some first hand stories of incidents in the Pacific during World War II that I heard directly from my father and two of my uncles.
