You might want to reduce it a bit, though.
Wider sigs are usually less intrusive than tall sigs, because they won't stuff the threads with pointless stuff.

If your sig is taller than your profile bar, or wider than a regular, 800 by 600 screen, then it's probably too large.

Really, you *can't* take graininess away from a pic, once you save it as a high-compression jpeg.

Also, you can't resize gifs straight from 256 colours, you first have to raise them to full 32 bip planes, then you can do some editing.

It's like crushing crystals under a steamroller, and expect glue to fix things out.
Seriously man, lower the compression ratio, or you'll end up with a whole archive of murky pics.
