Real Religion

You could consider me a "christian" in some sense of the word, I read the bible and talk to God alot (pray), and believe Jesus is my savoir. I'm not particularly religous per say as a religion is kind of defined as a routine and a ritual (and I practise niether). I look at the Bible as a tool for getting closer to God.

Is my belief system flawed? Probably no more or less then anyone elses but it works for me. I'm not out to push my beliefs down anyones throat. But the moment I use the word Christian in association with myself (or try to defend my beliefs in any way) I get the vibe from most people that I'm some kind of bible thumper out to control, supress, and destroy them. So i'll keep my mouth shut as it inevitably gets me in trouble and just say to Forgottentickler that it was big of him to start this thread, even though it was started awhile ago.
Oh and incidentally if I ever had a kid I would show him/her what I know and allow him/her to draw his/her own conclusions.

Peace

To Amnesiac: Dude, you da man! I wish their were more like you.

To killedbyanangel: I wish there were more Christians like you brother. 🙂 Best of luck in everything you do spiritually. 🙂

To DVNC: Why is when you post in a thread about religion, I have this mental image of a headmaster walking in the door, complete with mortar-board and black gown? :blaugh: As soon as you show up brother, I keep going back and checking my approach and deleting potential flame-bait. LOL Did you know that you scare the shit out of me?😛

a little historical note

judeism is almost 6,000 years old, not 4,000.
and before that the same people were known as "hebraics".
they are the ones who stopped the sacrifice of childrento baal, et al.
so we jews have been into the "one god" thing for a lot longer than since 2100 b.c.e.

Damn, I love learnin' new stuff through this site! Thanks for them tidbits, Steve. Part of the value of discussion, way I see it! It was the book used by the Jews that begat the book used by the Christians, which begat the book used by the Moslem faith. Each added their view. S'long as one learns to treat others well, it's all good to me.

Killedbyanangel, I dig your contributions to this, too. Nothin' wrong wit' a true Christian, a Christian that follows the teachings of that Christ fellow. The man was all about the love, and so am I, so I dig the word. Don't dig the actions of the organizations near me claiming to represent Christianity, but havin' problems with a CHURCH don't mean that the faith is bad, wrong or otherwise unpleasant. Means I don't dig the way I see the churches. I've way too many friends who I feel are good people, and are church-goin'. They dig that I respect 'em, and don't dig the church's global practices. The respect for good people is more valuable.

Jim, brother, y'crack me up! Been ages since ya bit anyone that I've seen, and you keep revivin' thinker threads like this, which I dig. Always renews my faith in humanity, t'be honest. Hope ya can view me as the benevolent-oppressive-moderator-type. 😉

I've shared my views a long time back in this thread, but there is something I need to address here quickly.
As a parent, it's my moral obligation to share my experience and my knowledge with my child. An unforgivable sin is to let a child fall behind society without any grasp on what may lie outside his or her own little picket-fenced-in version of the world. It's right to encourage self thinking and growth, but it's selfish and moronic to expect a child to deal with the reality that religion exists in on the planet without giving him or her some tools with which to function when the topic comes to light.

Do you hand a person a copy of Crime and Punishment and expect them to "get it" on any level when they've never been exposed to language, much less words? Seems damn silly to me.

Book - heavy - big - square - hurt when drop on foot. God?

Dave: Yes massah! 😀

Joby-Wan: Sounds cool to me. I don't think that approach is going to blunt any developing critical faculty.🙂

Gotta agree wit' ya, Jo. It's what my ma did. I was clued to the major religions early, and did my Bible-readin', more out of curiosity than anything else. I always wished the clarity of the stories was better. Same with the Baghavadgita (sp?), Koran, and Torah, Buddhist and Daoist stuff had a lot of perspectives, and back then there were less volumes available. Gotta love the net, now. Solves much.

So does global publishing.

Hope your boy's well, Jo!
