The mother of a friend of mine actually met Shatner a few years back; he's apparently a huge dick.

I went to a couple of ST conventions, and just about every star who came there was nicer than Shatner! MUCH nicer!

James Doohan, Walter Konig and George Taki have all had less then nice things to say about Mr. Shatner, yet they all seemed to like him just enough to make 6-7 films with him. Bill Blackburn (DeForest Kelly's stand in, and a walk on for 59 episodes of the original Star Trek Series) claimed Shatner was nice to all of the crew, and to him as well, and enjoyed being on Blackburns personal fims he made on the set.

I don't like my boss and several of my colleagues as well. I still work with them every day! Why would it be a reason not to film with him if they don't like him? It's work!

It's just my personal impression from Shatner that he is a arrogant guy who is too much in love with himself!

As an actor, I can tell you that it is not uncommon at all to work with someone you think is a dick, and still work with them. Especially in Hollywood, when a big name actor means that smaller roles are going to benefit from their presence, whether the person is an asshole or not. You don't pass up many jobs in that business.

Hey don't get me wrong, I have heard all about how much of an ass hole Shatner is. I have worked in the past with people I didn't like, but only one person I would really say I hated. We still work at the same place, but I don't have to work with him directly any more. If I founs myself having to again I would probably quite simply because I hate his guts so much, and I have no wife or kids to worry about. Shatner may be an ass hole, but these other people lack conviction because they shit on him, yet they continued to work with him.

As does Nichelle Nichols (Lt Uhura), yet she & George Takei did Shatner's Comedy Central Roast. James Doohan, on the other hand wanted nothing NOTHING to do with him. What could have Shatner done to him that made Doohan hate him so much? I have not read Nichelle Nichols' book about her time working with him, but I DO remember seeing a little 'interview' thing she did with him on TV to promote her book. The only thing that I can remember is that she said to his face, "Ok, this is why I despise you." & she went to explain it. Wish I can remember it. Her book is called 'Beyond Uhura: Star Trek and Other Memories' (1995, memoir)

Star Trek actors get interviewed about their relationships to their co-workers ALL THE DAMN TIME! So why should they lie if Shatner is an ass? 🙂

We are not talking about Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise here who can chose from the roles they get offered, these people are not doing very much more than Star Trek! They ARE Star Trek!

As an actor *even though I've only really done theatre* I must concur with you. Even if someone can be a dick, if the person is able to work professionally while on stage or on screen then you need to forget that their a dick so the thing can be a success because you want it to be a success even if you don't really like the people you're working with.

Except for Patrick Stuwart I must agree.. But Patrick Stuwart has played in other movies such as the very successful movie series X-Men..

however Shatner also gets other roles which irritates me.. he was in that one Law show.. Part of me wants to say it's Boston Legal but part of me says that's wrong.. But the other people mainly get made for tv movies on the sci-fi channel or maybe roles on sci-fi shows John De Lance (Q) was on Star Gate SG1, Colm Meany (Miles O'Brian) and Robert Picardo (The Doctor) were on Star Gate: Atlantis... of course Geordi, can't forget him, he was the main Reading Rainbow guy on PBS, I think before TNG even started..

And I can go on and on about other roles that stat trek people got, but yes, only Picard got a successful role in a movie (Professor X).

So I'll shut up now 🙂

did you get to meet John De Lance (Q from TNG, DS9 and Voyager). I've never met Shatner in person so I only know about his errogance from what I've been told but John De Lance is also pretty errgoant. I didn't really like meeting him so much..

I have never met Shatner but I did know his current wife, Elizabeth. We grew up on the same gravel road near my town. She brought him back here when they registered to get married and had the ceremony here. I was one of the people misdirecting the press that surrounded this town the week leading up to the marriage.

The take I got on Shatner was that when you had him alone he was just Bill, but when there was a crowd or he was on the phone(which seemed to be constantly) he was Shatner. Of course he has various business interests and a profitable horse farm on the side apart from acting and most of the calls were incoming. However, he had to stay in a certain sized house and have a special diet availiable to him. So I guess the general concensus for those that met him was he can be an arrogant prick. But he can afford to be one. Just his personality, I suppose.

Patrick Steward also had an acting life before he got into ST, he is actually a theater actor and member of the Royal Shakespeare Company. That guy really knows how to act. 😉 Compared to the others he was also pretty old when the show started (so was Robert Picardo who is a really really nice guy 🙂 ). Apart from Levar Burton who was Kunta Kinte in Roots, none of the others had really done anything where you could recognize them from! (Was Jonathan Frakes in North and South? I believe so....but he kinda got acted into the wall by Patrick Swayze.)

Patrick Stewart is always going to be Patrick Stewart....he can do other stuff. But the others....when I see Jonathan Frakes, I think "Riker", when I see Marina Sirtis, I think "Troi". When I see Michael Dorn I don't even know who the hell he is! 😉 They will be stuck with those roles FOREVER!

John de Lancie doesn't really count....he is not a regular. 🙂 (And no, I never got to meet him!)

Shatner also got bigger roles in other TV shows, for him, ST was kind of the start of his career. I'm thinking of TJ Hooker, and yes, the other show is Boston Legal (which I enjoy 🙂 ) and which seems to have done its casting at a Star Trek Set. 🙂

Yeah, I totally forgot about Lavar Burton being in Roots.. That was a good movie, even though it was hecka long lol.. But yeah, I think Roots started his career.. But whenever I see Lavar Burton I think the Reading Rainbow guy lol.. even though I'm a huge trekkie, I loved him as Geordi but I think it's cool that he was the Reading Rainbow guy.. and yeah, I don't think I've ever seen Jonathon Frakes as anything but Riker...

But there are a few people I felt like mentioning where in movies that I forgot until now that were pretty big movies.. Colm Meany (Miles O'Brian) apart from being in Star Gate Atlantis.. I have recently seen him in Law and Order, I think it was Law and Order, I watched it just because he was in it bc I don't like that show.. but even before Star Gate Atlantis Colm Meany was in Under Siege and Con Air. Even though I do prefer him as Miles O'Brian, one of my favorite ST Characters, he plays a good bad guy bc that's all I've seen him do besides O'Brian, bc in Atlantis he was also a bad guy, same with the movies and the Law and Order episode..

Micheal Dorn (Worf) was in The Santa Clause 2 and 3, he played The Sandman. Just so you know what he looksl ike when he's not a Klingon if you haven't seen those movies, go look 😛.. (The Sandman is the guy that keeps falling asleep and has the power to put people asleep if you didn't know lol)

Those are the two I felt like adding lol..

Garret Wang is awesome by the way, he played Harry Kim on Voyager. I met him quite a few years ago, he was really nice and we didn't even have to pay for his autograph and he talked to us and stuff and shook our hands and he even signed more than one autograph for my brother becase someone we knew that was a Star Trek fan couldn't make it..

I had the opertunity to meet someone else in Star Trek this semester becuase he was in a play at my school and he was going to go talk in my Acting for Film class but stupid me, the one day I was absent he came because we didn't know what did he'd make it.. He played one of the Xindi on Enterprise. Those bad guys in the expanse Archer tried to find and stop from attacking earth in the 3rd season

And as a cool note, Robert Beltran (Chakotay from Voyager) graduated as a Theatre Major (My major) from my college 🙂

Well, all I can say is Billy Blackburns home videos (you can see them on the Star Trek remastered DVD Set) make it apear that he, De Kelly, Spock and Nichell Nicholes all got along well. There is also a story from one of the prop guys that Shatner and Doohan kept playing socker with some balls he'd painted for and episode of the show.

I am not saying anybody lied, maybe things chainged in the later seasons of the show. I am just saying there are some contradictions with all these Star Trek actors who say they hate Shatner.

"I must be the only Indian in the galaxy that can't start a fire with 2 sticks"

That was one of the funniest lines in Star Trek.

That must have been why Mr. Doohan was in National Lampoons Loaded Weapon 1 with him. If Nichelle hates Bill so much why do I have video footage of her patting him on the ass playfully in a behind the scenes video from the old series? Why does she love telling the story about how he made sure they had to use the on film kiss from the episode "Plato's Stepchildren?

Like I said, there are some real contradiction here. It's almost like everybody decided to play a game of "Lets all hate William Shatner" or something.

You know, some people can be asses overall and still do stuff that people appreciate! Never been working with someone who is a total prick and every now and then the person does something that is fine and dandy? That won't make you like them more, because you just can't handle their overall personality!

Why does she love telling the story about how he made sure they had to use the on film kiss from the episode "Plato's Stepchildren?

Uhm...obvious one! Because it was the first interracial TV kiss!! That was a big thing to her - and to a lot of people - , him being an ass or not!

@mtTicklemonster: Sure, some of them might have small roles in movies that weren't all that popular, but if you started your career with a series which lastet for years, it is going to be really hard to do a big movie and play the title roll.

for the people that commented on Shatner being hated.. I don't think people started to get annoyed by Shatner until they started making movies.. They got along during the series but it only went on for like 3 years.. When they started doing the movies, I think that's when Shatner started being more errogant..

About the movies I mentioned, Undersiege with Colm Meany.. I loved Undersiege.. one of the only Segal movies I liked...

And The Santa Clause 2 and 3, the ones I mentioned Micheal Dorn were in, they were really popular actually.. you said movies that weren't that popular, those movies were pretty popular.. maybe not where you're from but over here they were. And yeah, he didn't have a big part in the 2nd movie but his role as The Sandman was decent size for the third movie.

Ohh, and I was watching Theodore Rex just now and it reminded me about Whoopie.. I know you said recuring people don't count because they're not main but she played Guinin in quite a few episodes and she was also in Generations.. and she's pretty big.. Everyone loves Whoopie 🙂
