Sig pics, stereotypes, and the way we behave

If you really want to see how something attached to users' online identities can change the way that users act in an everyday online situation, compare posts before and after the word "MODERATOR" is added.

I just posted my favorite picture of me, and below that are KMFDM Lyrics. I dont really go in to picking my sig with a mindset like that..

Well, for my sig we had to take a pause during filming, you know, get the fog right and make sure the mask wasn't all wrinkled...

My thread! IT LIVES!!! Crazy. :cool2:

I've noticed what you mean recently. :idunno: But I'd guess that it's more to do with being a moderator, as opposed to having the word "MODERATOR" attached to your name.

I just posted my favorite picture of me, and below that are KMFDM Lyrics. I dont really go in to picking my sig with a mindset like that..

I reiterate: I don't think most people consciously choose sigs with this mindset. I just think it's interesting that the end results often fall into very predictable, sexually-alluring patterns, which I think speaks to motivations that may not reach the level of conscious awareness.

This is me, what more need be said... Except that I write a lot more than just tickling stories.

My name is basically tickle with my nickname on it hah!
My sig pic is how i feel around Mr.Ticklebutterfly.I'm so much more of a cute, playful, fun tickle kind of a girl than hardcore, gagging girl.(most of the time haha!)
Andddd. The fact it was the ONLY tickle pic that didn't involve some kind of child on photobucket, that had a lot to do with it.
I hate parents posting videos/pictures of them tickling their children. :idontwann

My sig pic hardly looks like me unfortunately, but I kinda grew up with them. Would that count for anything?

My sig is who I am, a self promoting force of nature. :evilha:

I lack a pic because what pic could do justice to a FORCE OF NATURE.
(that and I don't know how to put up a sig pic and
don't try to tell me. Others have tried and I just don't get it lol)

Edit: No room for my sig pics anymore. 🙁

The sig that i use gives a pictorial representation of my personality (take away the social awkwardness). With the exception of the anime screenshot, the rest are images that i've created over the years. It's no secret that i'm kind of an egotist when it comes to me paintings.

There's a photo of me in my sig pic, albeit the one that failed the retina scan.
What does that signify? Who knows...

I like my pic for it reminds myself of me.. beauty hiding behind a mask and the significance of the butterfly is beautiful and the hug sig is totally me.. I am a huggger

O.K. I finally figured out the sig pic thing and now I have one (two).
My sig pic is a reminder of a few of the many friends I've made. 😀

My sig is pretty simple:

What I'm doing right now - because updating it gives me something to do 🙂

My myspace link cause I used to be a myspace ***** - so anything and everything you could possibly want to know about me can be found on my myspace LOL

A pic of me and 13 in Ohio - because we're a-fucking-dorable

A garfield cartoon - because I love garfield, and I love that quote

A Silly People Unanimous thing - cause I am, in fact, silly 😛

A quote from :sigh: Avril Lavigne, because crying in front of people is next to impossible for me, so if I reach that point of trust with you, and I start to cry, I don't want to talk. Chances are there's not alot you can say that will make me feel better than the feeling of sitting there and trusting you enough to let you see me cry. (yesh...tis deep)

So...I'm not really trying to convey any message or portray anything particular...just a few pieces of shtuff that makes me feel like me 😀

This is one of the coolest threads I've ever spent 45 minutes reading (ugh...phew).

Choosing to represent yourself as sexually alluring comes from a desire, usually a subconscious one, to reap the benefits of being attractive. Right and wrong have nothing to do with it, but it's very interesting to think about.

Consider makeover shows, or weight loss shows where a group of trendy experts take typically plain looking people, and give them makeovers or help them lose weight. You'll often hear these people tell the audience that they want their external appearance to reflect how they feel on the inside. It's then interesting to note how everyone seems to feel like a good-looking thin person.

But that has all been said. It's fantasy fulfillment, and it's seizing the opportunity to be more attractive to others, for social or self-esteem benefits. Again, it's not right or wrong.

I also wonder if there's a status difference between people with no signatures, and people with signatures. I just made myself one, and chose to avoid representing my appearance in order to avoid this whole issue. I went with the handcuffs and feather as obvious symbols for why I'm here, and the space image with the quote is a reference to the "LD" part of my name, "Laplace's Demon," which is part of the construction of a particular philosophical concept I found cool when I chose my name a few years ago. Of course, you could probably analyze why I relate myself to that particular concept/quote and glean something of my personality or self perception.

Anyway, I'd suspect that people with no signatures are given less attention. "They haven't bothered to make a signature, how serious and involved can they really be in this community."

Since the creation of my signature two days ago, I've recieved an equal amount of PMs as I had in my previous three-years on the forum. However, that might also be because I went on a posting blitz.

But to go back to the very first post, about that scientific study, I think it's VERY interesting that avatars affect behaviour in real life.
