Something wrong with the site?

Noticed a definite decline in site visitation in the past week. Is everything okay? I can't fix what I don't know to fix.

Yes, as a matter of fact...

Recently there have been constant messages saying that the server is too busy, and to try back later. People can't access threads, attachments, or the site itself sometimes, which, naturally, makes things very frustrating. Some strange side effect of the server move, perhaps?

^ That. Since I started checking threads, I've been getting constant "The server is too busy at the moment. Please try again later." messages. I know you did it for a reason, but whatever server you are using seems unable to handle any sort of high load. Most people get impatient after refreshing a few times and leave, probably. Can't browse if it won't let'cha.

I've been getting that error too a LOT. It goes in spurts...I wont get it ffor a few days and then a few days that's ALL I get. 🙁

Not an error, Ness. TT enabled a feature that stops activity when server load reaches a certain level. It prevents damaging crashes.

... What kind of server move did they do? Up or down? 🙂

I confirm troubles accessing the site.

And address migration doesn't seem complete yet: by entering www.tickletheater.net I get the unmasked site's ip and directory.

Unless you subscribed for a lower bandwidth consumption, they are ripping you by limiting your traffic.

...

Well, or maybe they just misconfigured the server machine.

I've doubled the warning limit so let's see if that helps. I don't want to push it too much more than that. This is becoming ridiculus though. I'm running this single site on a 2.8Ghz P4 with 1Gb memory and 80Gb hard drive. I'm going to have to go dual Xeon's soon at this rate.

Kalamos, tickletheater.net is suppose to resolve to the IP address since that's what I used during the redirect period when tickletheater.com wasn't accessible.

We shall soon see, when the membership comes back in force. It wouldn't surprise me if you end up having to get dual Xeons, if not now, then by the end of this year.

What about deleting older attachments? Or at least moving them elsewhere?

I know it is a stark choice but you could free cycles and disk space.

What about membership not being in force? Do non-members get to download files as well?

You must be registered to download files.

I mean, when we start getting the levels of activity we used to have. Just a few weeks ago, the little number at the bottom that said the greatest number of members online at a time used to change almost every day. But, it now hasn't changed since over a month ago. Activity is down. When it comes back, demand will soar. However, disk space isn't really the problem. RAM and processing power are the things that get hit. A server can only handle so many jobs at a time, and eventually, as a site grows, so must the ability to handle work, namely RAM and Processing Power. Disk space only needs to grow as space is needed.

Do I understand correctly that you are now hosting it yourself. I am also getting the server busy. Got it all day today.. even to see who was online. A single 2.8 with a gig will probably not work when you are running at the full capacity you were at. Just to let you know.. none of the connection weather it was the IP addy or the .com were fowarding.. then I remembered the change to .net and then got the server busy msg's

Mmmm... what about completely barring the site out to non-members?

Other forums do it; would it be of any help?

TT I just got this one and its 6:30 am
Sorry! The administrator has specified that you can only do one search every 20 seconds.

That's just a common error message. It's suppose to do that to keep people from flooding the site with site searches since it is a semi-intensive process on the server.

Well I'm not hosting it exactly myself. I do rent the server from a server company but I do manage it. The site was running on a 2.4Ghz celeron before this with the same memory actually so this was an upgrade from the celeron to pentium 4, and 400mhz increase.

Perhaps people are getting the server too busy messages because the server is lasting long enough for those messages to get out. Because the celeron crashed all the time remember, and this one hasn't crashed on its own before. Sure I've reset it a few times manually to increase speed, but that's it.

I put in a request for more memory...so let's see how that goes.

I'm keen on knowing, how more stable is a pentium 4 vs a celeron?

No idea here, i'm not too into computers stuff 😀 . There are surely differences between all processors - i guess that a 3ghz processor is quicker than a 2ghz 😀 - i have a celeron 500 and it works fine.

K: Celerons are. #1, older than P4s, I believe. #2, they are essentially like the cheaper alternative. A Celeron is simply not as powerful as a P4, nor as swift at processing.

Well, I've been told about better heat management in p4 cpus. Celerons tend to hang if they get over 80° C - while Pentiums make do by lowering their throttle.

I wanted to know about instruction sets and extended commands - such as 3Dnow in Athlon line.

I'm dabbling with linux now, so I'd like to get a viable cpu for both my OS's.

[Don't you think we need a tech corner, here? 😀 😀 😀 ]

Better heat management does equal better performance. Then again, there is always overclocking.

lol, yes, we do. 😛

My real gripe is with stability... I don't run anything requiring bleedingedge technology.

However, when I draw or type, I need the machine not to crash on me... 😀 😀 😀

[I DO have backups, but... it's nasty nevertheless when it happens. 😀 😀 😀 ]

Yours crashes regularly? Mine never does, although it does have a tendancy to erase Windows every six months (I have it down so well that last time, I backed up the day before it went kablooey.).

Lately it started resetting itself, usually during file-copying.

It's really my fault, I let the OS degrade to the point of self-awareness. 😀

Somehow, I could taint even linux with free chaotic will. It keeps forgetting periferals when it feels like.

Today I managed to set up my mice for drawing, and it "forgot" about the pci modem.

It couldn't even be a virus - unless we call infected a mischievous AI... 😀 😀 😀
