Being a Star Wars geek, a Lord of the Rings nerdling, and a practitioner of Rock and/or Roll, I thought I might bring up the fact that nerds are just as diverse as the rest of society combined. Take your average person, add the nerdiness of your preference and voilà, you still have a person. Nerdism is an attribute, not a class. I have actor friends, jock friends, computer friends, preppy friends, anti-social friends, military friends, and stoner friends who all show distinct forms of nerdism.
The past-times of a person do not regulate his ability to be an imagineer. Playing basket-ball does not restrict someone from constructing a lightsaber.
I, myself, have complete outfits of a Sith, a Corellian pilot, Swordsman, and a Ranger. I have two garage bands, simply because I have two guitarists friends and I didn't want to leave one out. The rest of the band is exactly the same, and we opened for each other once. I'm pretty nerdy, proud of it, but I wear nice clothing. Not gap, not guess, not polo, but I shop at thrift shops and flee markets where you can find nice attire for very humble prices. A lot of people are surprised that I am a nerd, my mannerisms all tend towards the mellow side I've been told.
In conclusion, Nerdism can be added or subtracted to any individual and they will remain the same person. It's true, Jerkism and Nerdism seem to contrast in every example that I have witnessed, but that doesn't mean a Nerd can't play football or lift weights. I may not, but I know nerds that do. Not all jocks are jerks, not all chess players are nerds. Both Nerdism and Jerkism are characteristics not characters.
