Just below the editing window are the message icons. Below them, there is a section called "Additional Options", and the second item in it is "Thread Subscription". The default is "Do not subsribe", but you can use the drop-down menu to choose to subscribe with the type of email notification that you like. 😀

When you're typing your post, it is in the editing window, the white rectangle in which you are actually typing, also known as the message window. To the right of the white rectangle are the smilies.

"Post Icons" are just below the white rectangle in which you are typing your post.

A whole new section, "Additional Options", is below "Post Icons".

Scrolling down to the "Addtional Options" section, the first item in it is "Miscellaneous Options" and the second is what you want, "Thread Subscription", with a drop down menu that lets you subscribe and receive email notification of responses.

You can certainly subscribe to a thread where you already have a post when editing your previous post there.

For a thread where you have no posts, I guess you could add a reply and subscribe, and then delete your reply a minute later. You should try that and see if you're still subscribed. 😛
