The note of uncertainty (both Dora's and ours) makes these end pages most haunting. That Dora will never learn the truth about Priëlla until after her death, if even then (whether or not her infernal friend survived her return to hell; whether she even existed in reality or simply as a childish fantasy) gives the tale a wistful tone, leavened somewhat by our faith that good things are likely to happen to good demons. Priella's earned a little redemption, true; without a sequel to inform us, we'll never know if she ever was able to achieve it. Adult Dora's closing admonition, "Be good, Priëlla"… a well-worn pleasantry from her other unremembered existence… is a bittersweet piece of serendipity that addresses closing rather than continuance. All the same, I'd like to believe that these two unlikely comrades will be reunited someday.
