The "Best Rock'n'Roll Songs" thread........

tough choice, but my pics would be...

" sunshine of your love "..........cream

" red house " .........jimi hendrix

" kiss of death " ........dokken

" back in black " AC / DC

" over the mountain " Ozzy w/ Randy Rhoads

Just 5 more and I'll quite hogging the thread

The Magnificent Seven - The Clash
Dreadlock Holiday - 10cc
Touched - Vast
This is the Day - The The
Sympathy for the Devil - The Rolling Stones

Limited to only five? OK, this could be quite a few posts, in no particular order...

Tumbling Dice - The Rolling Stones
Jealous Again - The Black Crowes
Bastards of Young - The Replacements
Johnny Hit and Run Paulene - X
Blue Shadows - The Blasters

Limit it to five? Yeah, sure. Ok, I'll keep it small, though. Every time someone does one of these lists, I am tempted to try and list things that were important to the history of rock or music. I'll list the greatest rock songs to me personally.

Solisbury Hill - Peter Gabriel. The song I want to be buried to. An infectious guitar hook and probably the most clever masking of 3/4 time ever.

Don't Stop Believin' - Journey. A rock anthem for the ages. One of the most recognizable riffs in rock history. This is one of those songs that means something to everyone.

Tom Sawyer & Limelight - Rush. I doubt there's a single person in the world who cannot identify Tom Sawyer about two seconds into the song. And Limelight has always been my favorite Rush tune.

Karn Evil 9 - Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Yeah, the whole damn thing, all three "impressions." Progressive rock at its height.

Fight the Good Fight - Triumph. An anthem that is truly timeless and Triumph at thier finest.

Only Time Will Tell & Don't Cry - Asia. I may be a bit biased about OTWT, as it was the first somewhat compicated tune I learned to play on keyboards, but these two songs were the best of a band that made prog-rock radio-friendly and accessible.

When the Levee Breaks - Led Zeppelin. A haunting tune that ends in one of Zep's catchiest riffs.

Immigrant Song - Led Zeppelin. Already mentioned, and for the same reasons.

Misplaced Childhood - Marillion. Ok, it's a concept album, but it's technically one long song.

Hmm so many of you have mentioned songs that I love and would have mentioned myself :couch: Here's a few that pop to mind, although there are others and I may add some later:

Whiskey in the jar - Lynard Skynard (although I also love Metallica's version).
Whole lotta Rosie - AC/DC (although there are several classics from them)
For those about to rock (we salute you) - AC/DC
Hey Joe - Jimi Hendrix
Stairway to heaven - Led Zepp

Actually the original "rock" version of "Whiskey in the Jar" was done by Thin Lizzy, Slap. Lynyrd Skynyrd did "Whiskey Rock 'n' Roller".......they're both great songs.

And Headsnap........."Bobby Brown"? BWAAHAHAHAHAH!!!
I haven't heard that in years!!

Drew

Thank you, you are absolutely right, I knew it was Thin Lizzy, I don't know why I wrote Skynyrd; a bad day it seems 🙂

Hey Drew......

I was lounging with some friends watching a "Sopranos 6th season" dvd (I still don't know what happened in the "Sopranos" final show, because I watched that horrific NBA finals game :wow: ) and at the end of Sopranos episode , they featured a Chuck Berry song......

Everybody's jaw dropped, and eyes got wide, and everybody jumped up in the room and busted out their best boogie dance moves! 😛

Nobody here knows the name of that song, but Chuck Berry sings about a prison "chain gang" building railroad tracks before the train comes at them..... :xlime:

What's the name of that song, Drew? All of our I Pods are waiting!...... :xpulcy:

Hey there people I'm Bobby Brown... I've developed a worrying penchant for singing that in work to looks of bemusement and horror from co-workers and managers alike. What saddens me is when they ask who originally sang the song, I reply Frank Zappa, and they say "... who?...." 🙁

Welcome to the Jungle - Guns N'Roses: In 4 and a half minutes, they basically managed to blow away the previous 8 years of hair metal.

Hmmmmm.........I haven't listened to the Chucker in a few years since I've been playing so much jazz lately. But I think the song may possibly be "Downbound Train". Actually kind of an eerie song involving a drunken dream about the devil running a trainload of people to hell.
