The thing is, most people do not realize what a tremendous advantage technology really is.
Case in point, when I was in Special Projects we had about the best equiped sub in the world. TODAY my old boat might last 5 minutes in combat. I'm talking only 15 years later.
In WW2 by late 1943 US warships were beating Japanese ships that on paper should have destroyed them. The difference was radar was getting so good the US was firing from areas and ranges where the Japanese couldn't see. A good example is the Battle Of Surigao Straight. A japanese battlesfleet was destroyed before they even knew they were being fired on.
In the Med the HMS Penelope destroyed a German Convoy that had no idea the Penelope was in the area. In fact it wasn't until after WW2 the Germans even knew the convoy wasn't lost to a Submarine.
Plains carry so much ECM now they virtually disappear in the sky, and since stand off weaponry is so good now they don't even have to come within range of a targets defenses.
