the definition of "Goth"

i discussed this with friends the other day and got to wondering (quick, hide!) what defines someone who's goth? i notice everyone loves Goth chicks in pics and tickling scenes and such, but is it the look, the lifestyle, or both? and what lifestyle exactly? i also notice some people i know can't really tell the difference between goth and emo. what's your definitions/opinions?

as far as i can tell, someone who's goth doesn't conform to society's standards and thinks outside the box, dressing how they want, listening to music they love etc, which happens to be mostly metal (which i friggin love). again, my definition my be whack and wrong.

emo, on the other hand are people centered around darkness and depression, sulking in a corner somewhere, against what everyone else is doing, sometime contemplating death. downers, so to speak. at least this is what i've been lead to believe.

As near as I can tell, the biggest distinction is in the music. While some acts labeled as "goth" don't suck, pretty much every band that falls under the "emo" banner does.

The New York Times recently had a fairly interesting article on the evolution of goth as a fashion, reaching back to the nineteenth-century Gothic novels that inspired the term and beyond. Apparently the style of dress ultimately owes something to the mourning clothes of Victorian women. The article ranged from people today who attach fangs to their teeth and live earnestly as vampires to the more playful goths who put skulls on their cute black clothes for a night out.

Gothic architecture is a style of architecture which flourished during the high and late medieval period. It evolved from Romanesque architecture and was succeeded by Renaissance architecture.

I've got a pretty clichéd view of goths. Dark clothes, skulls, black eyeliner, etc. In my experience, if you ask ten goths what the definition of goth is, you'll get ten different answers. 😛

My wife was a goth back in the middle '80's.

My middle stepson likes to be a "half-goth". He says it's because he like the fashion. he seems to also like emo music but goes nuts if you call him emo.

We just can't convince him that "half-goth" is a word he invented that means POSER.

Poser also pisses him off.

He's gonna get beat a lot when he hits high school next year🙄
