Pi is a very old number. We know that the Egyptians and the Babylonians knew about the existence of the constant ratio pi, although they didn't know its value nearly as well as we do today. They had figured out that it was a little bigger than 3; the Babylonians had an approximation of 3 1/8 (3.125), and the Egyptians had a somewhat worse approximation of 4*(8/9)^2 (about 3.160484), which is slightly less accurate and much harder to work with. For more, see A History of Pi by Petr Beckman (Dorset Press).

That is a fine book. 😀

It should also be noted that Archimedes of Syracuse knew that:

3+10/71 < pi < 3+1/7

which he proved via inscribed and circumscribed polygons to a circle of diameter 1.

No, I believe he said that when realizing that a totally submerged object displaces its own volume of water. 😀

Interesting thread, Milagros. I've learned more about pi than I ever did in high school. 😛

omg- what did you do in High School??Sleep?

🙄 You say that like it's a bad thing. LOL! 😛

Seriously, we learned what we were required to learn and the teachers didn't go into too much depth on the history of pi. Except for my geometry teacher, she was such a math geek that we even celebrated pi day in class. 😛

I didn't like Maths at high school. But now I am more interested in it..... :cool2:

I always liked math (which the British call maths, although we both say "mathematics" so maybe their way is more consistent). 😀

I was on my high school's math team from my freshman year to my senior year. I wasn't like genius smart with math, but I got decent grades and I enjoyed math.

and the British also say through and Americans say thru, so it was just simplified. People are like electrons..... they are at the smallest energy level.. that is why they do not want to work......
