I get exactly the same feeling when I look at this artwork. The style is reminiscent of things like the old comic strip, "Gasoline Alley," "Felix The Cat," and the characters look like something out of the old "Comix" series comic books.
I find the familiarity to be comforting. It harkens back to a day when I was very young and impressionable - when a mischieviously placed feather on a highly ticklish cartoon foot could make me tingle in my little pajamas.
Keep up the great work, and thanks for marrying such a great and familiar style with the wonderful world of tickling.
The vintage comic strip comparison is certainly apt, ShadowTklr, and it's one I sometimes fail to site in preference to cartoon imagery. But E.C. Segar's (sp?) "Thimble Theater" (another "TT"!) strip has always been a huge favorite of mine and much of his character design (in particular, some of the less recognizable arch-types like Ham Gravy and Castor Oil [Olive's brother]) definitely emerge in my own style. I find your perspective and reminiscence on this point quite touching... thank you for sharing it!
A Late accolade to be sure, but thank you for sharing
your Consummate time and talents with us. I find page
15 to be especially intriguing, I find it to be both frightening
and erotic. It now graces my desktop as the current screen-saver!
You are "The brightest star in this kings court" (Amadeus)
What wonderful compliments, Luckycat! Thank you very much! I'm quite honored you find page 15 pleasing enough to serve as a screen saver. It's my own personal favorite!
i know im a bit late in sayin this, but i really did enjoy that. good work. i dont know if this is out of line, but some of the weirder creatures remind me of thingsd from the comic "Bone." ... and thats really awesome. keep up the great work.
Thanks for the nice comments, Captain Bender! I'm not terribly familiar with the Bone comic series (I do know the title and recognize the main character when I see him). I did a bit of web research, though. The comparison seems like a strong one... certainly not out of line in any way. I couldn't find much graphic material (only a few comix covers), but my basic approach to story seems very similar to Jeff Smith's. I'll have a more thorough look and keep my eyes open for the comic... you've really got me intrigued!
Thanks for the link, kopfhorer! That Underworld strip is wild, demented stuff! Yeah, I strongly suspect Kaz ODed on early '30s animation, just as I did. He's certainly given that influence his own unique twist (and I use that term advisedly... some of those folks go off at right angles!) I definitely need to explore that site thoroughly and check in regularly!
And thank you for your delightful appraisal of Mercy! It's so rewarding for an artist when his character makes an impression!
*Applauds* A bit late, as it seems I perpetually am, but I comment nonetheless. A thorougly exemplary work by any standards, it is. The major and minor points have been noted and seconded already, so I'll not bore you with the details yet again. Suffice to say, a most enjoyable read. Well done.
Don't worry about being late, HDS! I'm just delighted to have you active again after being away for so long (now, if we can just get Vlad back...)! So pleased you enjoyed the story! Thanks so much for letting me know!
Thanks Darth Vegeta! That's most encouraging! I should be able to send Chapter 3 in a couple of months, around Christmas or perhaps a bit into January. The script is almost ready for story-boarding. Hope it'll prove pleasing! I'll be mixing in a couple of reader recommendations this time.
