And umm...what is a rail guage?
Jo

Hey!

My Uncle Bob is NOT the devil....just a bit...slow and showy at times! But he's trying reeealll hard! Q

The railroad guage. Or how to make a long story longer.

The US standard railroad gauge is 4 feet, 8.5 inches. (The distance between the two rails.) Why is that the gauge? Because that's the way they built them in England. Why did the English build them like that? Because the first rail lines were built by the same people who built the pre-railroad tramways, and that's the gauge they used. Why did they use that gauge? Because the people who built the tramways used the same jigs and tools that people used for building wagons which used a wheel spacing of 4' 8.5". Why did the wagons have that wheel spacing? Because any other spacing would not fit in the ruts in the roads and the wheels would break. So why is 4' 8.5" the spacing of the wheel ruts? The roads were built by Imperial Rome and Roman chariots had a wheel spacing of 4' 8.5" when they built the chariot just wide enough to be hitched to one horse.

So the railraod gauge was actually determined by a horses ass.

This has simply become the most entertaining thread..lol

It gets even better:

The width of railway tunnels was then based upon the rail gauge.
The rocket boosters that propel the Space Shuttle into orbit had to be sent via train from their construction site to the launch site at Kennedy Space Center, so they had to be narrow enough to fit through the tunnels.

Thus, the most advanced trans-atmospheric vehicle created by man is still dependent upon the width of a Roman horse's hindquarters...

Well not quite right

The supermarine spitfire managed quite well with out the romans thankyou! and it is of course still the most advanced trans-atmospheric vehicle.

Planes?

I have a 1941 Stearman, not exactly a match for the Spit, but a helluva nice ride on a sunny day! We max out at around 125 mph, but cruising along at 80 at around 500 feet up is the best feeling...lol. Q

PLANES

Hey Q....didn't know you were a flyer! I'm in ground school phase. 🙂 YAY! I love being in the air. I cpome from a family of pilots...it's like a law or somethin' 😉

Stearman...I saw one once..but it was an open air biplane. I don't know how old it was though. Is that what you have??? SHEESH!Scary..I like a cover thanks. lol

Jo

Stuka...lol

I checked it twice Red...it's a Stearman mate! Nice blue and yellow stripes, wooden propeller and constantly something broken...oh yeah...she's a beauty! Up for sale, BTW...we're asking about 90,000, which is around 10K under the book value. They're closing the smaller airports down out here to build houses and defense plants, so hangar fees are going through the roof! Q

For Sale?

Q,
Could send me a pic of it and the pertinent info? No joking here...I might know someone interested. My email is on the profile.
Thanks,
Jo
