The New York Mets - NL East Champs

JPie1 said:
David is a Mets Fan and I am a Yankee Fan...subway series is always interesting at our house! Detroit won't get past the Yanks.

Go Yankees, Go Mets (until they meet the Yanks!)

hmmmm looks like the Yankees lost to Detroit, tooo bad for yankee fans, Guess you won't be able to join the METS in the WS

Lets Go Mets!!!!!!!!!!!!!

St. Louis or San Diego, be afraid, be very afraid. This is a fun time to be a Mets fan.

Oh Knox. I did attend the seminar a Rod gave about hitting in the clutch. I must mention that I almost choked on my punch. Some of the more memorable points he made were that you always swing at the first pitch, especially if the pitcher is wild. It breaks a rhythem. Never hustle going down the line. Shit, you are making $25,000,000 per year. what would happen if you pull a hammy running down the line. The best was when he said you just disappear when it comes to the post season. Hell, I don't need all the post season incentives with my $25,000,000 salary. you have to look at the long term picture. I might get a hang nail or I might tie my shoes the wrong way and might not be ready for spring training. this will delay my season even more thus not giving the team a good cost benefit ratio. Shit, the hell with the team, It's all about me, right???

He said his buddy Darek Jeter is a prime violator of his theory because he leaves it all on the field. Every day, he puts his $18,000,000 salary per year at risk. He thinks he doesn't care about the team because of his outright hustle every day. He gives all the accountants agita

Can't you see I am just a little pissed at him right now? 😀

No need to provide a summary, my friend. I saw every pitch, down to the last out to Shawn Green. What did you think of coopers strike zone? I thought it was a little tight at times, especially when the Dodgers got three runs in the 5th

I saw every pitch too. It is more to push the noses of Yankees fans to be really honest.

Game Notes

NEW YORK'S CLIFF FLOYD HAS LEFT THE GAME IN THE THIRD INNING WITH A LEFT ANKLE INJURY.

To those that say the Mets don't have starting pitching, I say we have Tom Glavine. Mets behind 7 shutout innings from Tom Glavine and a sixth inning two out two run bomb by Carlos Beltran gave the Mets a 1-0 lead in the best of seven series. Mota pitched in the 8th and Wagner finished up in the ninth for his third save in the post-season. Mets win 2-0.

Well let's give the Cardinals credit. They beat up this Mets bullpen and the Cardinals even up this series at one apiece. The series now shifts to St.Louis where the next three games will be played.

Don't know about you, George, but I knew it wouldn't be a cakewalk. I knew the Card bats would have to come alive sooner or later.

Re Pujols: it was an emotional salve for the great Yankees clubs of the 1950s to claim aloud that any given opposing pitcher hurling a great game against them had "nothing". Yanks would come barrelling into Comiskey for a big weekend series, the Sox would start Billy Pierce, who was as airtight as could be offered in those days, and he'd put up zero after zero on the scoreboard, and Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra would cry out loud enough for the people in the stands behind the dugout to hear, "he's got nothing! He's got shit! I don't know why we can't get anything solid! He's got nothing today!"

A bit of perspective. Albert's the best player in the game today...he's entitled to his opinion, and you give a guy like this a pass.

The Cardinals surprised the hell out of me last night. The Mets bullpen has been awesome all year. LaRussa showed some guts by starting Scott Spezio instead of Scott Rolen at 3rd base. Rolens surgically repaired shoulder is just not ready to allow him to play so many games. But Spezio has been a clutch player all season. I still remember his great performance in the 02 World Series when he was with the Angels. This may turn out to be a more interesting series than I thought. As talented as the Mets are, I thought they might sweep.

The St.Louis Cardinals go up two games to one in the National League Championship Series over the New York Mets with a 5-0 whitewash. Jeff Suppan who is 3-6 lifetime against New York coming in dominanted the Mets batters and also slugged a homerun off starter and losing pitcher Steve Trachsel. The Mets find themselves in a position their fans would have never thought they would be in. Down 2-1 with Oliver Perez trying to save their season. Perez ( 3-13 6.55) will face off against Anthony Reyes ( 5-8 5.06 ) tomorrow at 8:05pm EDT in St.Louis.

NEW YORK PITCHER STEVE TRACHSEL LEFT THE GAME IN THE BOTTOM OF THE SECOND INNING DUE TO A BRUISED RIGHT THIGH.

Break out the bowls, Soups on!!! Jeff Suppan was brilliant, shutting out the Mets on 3 hits over 8 innings. He also hit a home run, the first postseason home run by a Cardinal pitcher since Bob Gibson hit one in game 7 of the 1967 World Series. To pitch a shutout against a lineup as powerful as the Mets is quite an accomplishment. What a stunning 24 hours this has been. Final score: Cardinals 5, Mets 0. I`ll step aside and let ticklingfeet4fun take over from here. He is brilliant the way he breaks down these games. :bowing:

Oops. I forgot to mention that he breaks down these games fast too. :yowzer:

Mets shuffle the Cards

The Mets showed everyone that you can only shut them down for a short time. The Mets got homeruns from Carlos Delgado ( 5 RBI in the game ), David Wright and two homeruns from Carlos Beltran as the Mets pounded the Cardinals 12-5. With the win the Mets tied the series at 2 apiece with game 5 tomorrow night. The Mets got a decent effort from starter Oliver Perez who gave up 5 runs ( he surrendered 3 homeruns ) in 5 2/3 innings. Game 5 will feature the game one starters on short rest. Tom Glavine will face off against Jeff Weaver. Here is how game #4 looks in the boxscore.

The Mets put on an impressive display of hitting. You don`t win 97 games by being lucky. Hopefully, the Cardinals will recover from the whiplash of watching the baseballs flying all over the stadium bt tonite.

Tonight's game between the New York Mets and the St.Louis Cardinals has been postponed due to rain. Game 5 of the National League Championship Series will resume tomorrow in St.Louis. Game 5 starters will be Tom Glavine 2-0 in the postseason with a zero ERA. For the Cardinals it will be Jeff Weaver who is 1-1 with an ERA of 1.69. Game 6 is still slated for Wednesday though I heard that the system that is currently in St.louis will be headed to New York. If it hit the New York area and seven games is needed in this series it might just delay the start of the World Series set to start on Saturday, October 21st in Detroit.

The Cardinals behind the pitching of Jeff Weaver and 4 relievers and a questionable strike zone by homeplate umpire Jeff Kellogg lands the Mets backs squarely against the wall. The Cardinals beat the Mets 4-2 and go up in this series 3 games to 2. The series shifts back to New York for games 6 and 7 if game 7 is necessary. The Cardinals got a homerun from moody Albert Pujols and rookie Chris Duncan to help pace the Cardinals. Final score from Busch Stadium Cardinals 4 - Mets 2. Game 6 is tomorrow as Chris Carpenter looks to clinch the series in Shea and John Maine will try to extend this series to a seventh game. Here is how this game 5 looked in the boxscore:

If the Cards do win the series, there will be two trains of thought:

1. If you lose your #1 and #3 starters, just how are you supposed to win? It seems to me the Mets had a one-man rotation

2. However the Mets knew how fragile Pedro was, and how old Hernandez is, and should have stocked their pitching to match their offense. They made their bed, now they have to lay in it

Now, the fact that they have to win game 6 with the Cardinals ace on the mound, (now granted Carpenter did not pitch well in Game 2, but everyone knows he will no doubt pitch better this time around)

Now for the Mets to win game 6, it will have to be a battle of the bullpens, but then again, the opposition is 0-31 with RISP and 2 outs against the Cards this postseason. Isn't the Mets bullpen who blew game 2 supposed to be a strength for them??

One question for you: when a pitcher is at his best, and is on, can he be beaten?? The reason I am asking is that if Carpenter is on tonight, what do you think the Mets chances are

Also to remember: Suppan pitched a hell of a game in game 3, he is the projected starter for game 7. it is a tall task for the Mets to win 2 back to back

on paper, the Cards are looking good right now. You might have an all-deck on hand scenario for the Mets these possible next two games

This is not an attack on the Mets, just stating facts

Whether you were rooting for the Mets or Cardinals, game 5 was one hell of a game. But this series is a long way from being over. The more I watch the Mets, the more I am impressed with their lineup. There`s not a easy out from 1 throu 8. And who could have predicted the story of Jeff Weaver. The Angels basically paid the Cardinals to take him off their hands, and he has come up big. Outside of the blowup in game 4, the Cardinals pitching has been very good. As I have stated in earlier posts, I am pleasantly stunned by what has happened thus far in this series. I honestly thought the Mets might sweep it in 4 games.

Yeah, I am sure it is not an attack. Did Carpenter pitch better last night??? Yes, he did. Did he win??? No, he did not. Your other stat of 0 for 31 was 2 for 5 last night. What do I think the Mets chances are??? Better than the Cubs chances of advancing to the 2006 World Series. That is what I think. But then again, this coming from a man who has been saying the the Tigers are a mirage. Well that mirage is waiting to play the World Series while your team is just waiting. Not an attack??? Sure you're right!!!

Jose Reyes got the Mets off to a good start with a leadoff homerun. John Maine pitched a very good game and gave off to the bullpen that held on. The Mets got 2- 2 out hits with runners in scoring position. With the Mets win they have tied this series at 3 games a piece. Game seven will be tomorrow night at Shea Stadium. Jeff Suppan who shut the Mets out in game three will go in game 7. The Mets will send either Oliver Perez or Darren Oliver or Steve Trachsel to the mound for game 7. Game seven winner has a date with the Detroit Tigers in Detroit and the loser will go home. Mets - Cardinals game 7 tomorrow at 8:19pm.
