As is usual in the NFL, the knee-jerk reactions are being bandied about as the 7-9 NFC West Champion Seahawks prepare for their first playoff game.

"We need to change the system!"
"We need 20 teams in the playoffs!"

No, we need to take a chill and realize that this is an abberation that is unlikely to be repeated. Division winners go to the playoffs, or else there's no meaning to divisional games other than ultimate record.

Does it suck this year? Yes. The Giants and Bucs stay home with 10-6 records. Like that's never happened before...winning-record teams missing the playoffs. That's why we even HAVE tie-breakers. Hell, the Patriots became the first 11-win team to ever miss the playoffs a couple years ago and no one was calling for a new system. In the history of the playoff system since the merger, only two 8-8 teams have won their divisions. This is the only time a losing team has done so. Out of how many years?

Hell, I even remember a Sports Illustrated article from the early-ish 90's about re-doing the system so the NFC and AFC teams were intermingled by record so we could get the Niners and Cowboys to play a Super Bowl. The cover story was "Should the NFC Dump the AFC?" because the NFC was on a long streak of Super Bowl wins and blowout games. Imagine if that had happened?

(And really guys...even if they were let into the playoffs, does anyone really see the Giants going anywhere the way they're playing? 😉 )

I guess the bottom line is this. If no one wants Seattle in the playoffs....then beat them and get them out. If New Orleans loses to Seattle...maybe they DO deserve it. Just sayin'. I mean...this game is probably going to be a 42-10 shellacking, but what if?

Now, if only the BCS had knee-jerk fixes for a broken system.... 😀

The rules are the rules, they deserve to be in, even though they will be eliminated by the Saints in the first round.

Lets wait and see what Goodell does after he see's that games ratings he loves making snap decisions.

I'd be inclined to agree that this is an aberration if it weren't for the fact that all of this division really sucks. They don't suck as much as my team did this season, but all 4 of them have had losing records for a lot of the last decade.

Kurt Warner seems more like an aberration for the NFC West, but in a positive way.

Unless at least one of these teams makes a lot of good moves in the draft and with trades, we're fairly likely to see another losing team enter the playoffs from this division.

Granted, of all 4 of them, the Rams seem to have the best chance of becoming a winning team next season. Sam Bradford is going to be pretty awesome in the long run.

? The Seahawks have a winning record in the 2000s and throwing out 2008 and 2009 they would be about 20 games over .500 for the decade.

Bottomline, you win your division you are worthy of the playoffs. Thats every teams goal prior to the season, and by hook or crook the Seahawks won their division. Every year it seems there is debate about the NFC West team not deserving their automatic bid into the playoffs but it is a division and its winner deserves to be in to the playoffs.

Giants' fans and especially Buccaneers' fans have a claim about not being in the dance, but they didn't get the job done in their division and because of that had to rely on the race for the wild card spots. If you don't handle business at home and especially in your division then don't complain about missing the playoffs.

I stand corrected. Still, if the strongest team in the division has an average like that, it does imply that the NFC West has seen much better days in the past.

I remember when the 49ers used to be great. Maybe with Harbaugh, they'll return to that, but I hope it happens soon for them or the Seahawks.

Last time I checked the Seahawks were up on the Saints by SEVEN!! IN THE 3RD QUARTER!!

Oh shit! It's looks like we were all wrong, including me. I thought this team stood no chance and they're proving that what happens on the field is all the matters. They just went up 41-30 on Lynch's TD run with 3-minutes to go. All hail the Seattle Seahawks!

I loved the way he spiked the ball on the sidelines, well after the play. If I were Jason Garret I would make every Cowboys player watch that about 100 times and maybe learn from it.

It's difficult enough to beat the other team on the field. When you self-destruct from your own stupidity you have no chance.

Seahawks are playing great. If a team gets on a roll it almost does not matter what their regular season record is.

I just read that the NFC west has the best playoff record of any division since 2005. Who would have guessed that??

Where'd you read that. I don't see how that's true with zero Super Bowl trophies to show. How many times have the 49ers and Rams been to the playoffs since then?
