Exactly. Just like waiters, they are paid a small salary and expect to get a generous tip (in non-taxable cash) from each customer (in this case, each resident of the building). 😀 😛

Works kind of the same way in chicago I am told.

We are not as apartment oriented here in LA thuogh there are still a lot of them. 🙂

I am lucky in that my building has only a superintendent to tip. Many people around here are also expected to tip the doorstaff, which may be 3 to 10 or more people covering the whole week in shifts. 😱
